I decided to stay home tonight to recover from last night so I spent a few working on a new look. I’m trying out a new theme. It’s a work in progress so bear with me as I’m not exactly too handy when it comes to any sort of code or programming. It’s a lot of trial and error (mostly error) and adapting tips on the internet (that probably made a lot of sense to people writing them) to my useless understanding on the fly. Although I did like the old theme, I felt a lot of it was clutter…mostly my own doing so I’ve decided to go for clean, clean and more clean this time around.
Going with red this time around since the site has been blue for almost four years now and I’ve become a little bored with it. The red is a bit bolder with the white. I’ve also removed the cheesy looking chicklets for RSS and Twitter counts and I’ll be working on making the text versions look good.
By the way…can someone explain web-safe fonts to me? How come other sites have awesome looking fonts if they’re not web-safe?
In case you need a reminder, here’s what the site used to look like.

So let me know what you think. Like the new look? Hate it? Suggestions?

The new look is great! Very nice and clean
Hi there Ed, I have been away so haven’t really been around to check on the happenings with you, how you been, I see the new look and its really awesome, I think that your regulars are going to love the new look.
Your move to red is biting my style.
The Flickr widget in the sidebar is nice and I appreciate the clean look, but…
1. I’d move the search closer to the top.
2. Maybe have some kind of color for outside the content area. The white on white is a lot of white.
3. Your RSS icon is squished.
4. No custom header image?
1. Search will replace our medal count when the Olympics are over.
2. I’m sort of digging the white on white at the moment. I might put in a light grey background as light red is…pink.
3. On purpose to match the Twitter bird’s proportions.
4. That is a custom header image…sort of.
I really dig the red, white, and black. Way to show patrotism! I really like the white on white too.
It’s very…Thesis Theme. You can move shit around, but it’s hard to make it look “pretty”. But apparently it’s very SEO friendly so that’s a trade off.
dig the thesis, man. I have it myself but like Stephen said, it’s a lot of work and i haven’t gotten around to pushing it online cause it isn’t something I like just yet.
I’m not a big fan of the Arial, or the ALL caps letters spacing in some of your headers, but that’s personal preference imo.
Good stuff.
How’s your olympic hangover going?
My brain wants me to keep parting like the last two and a half weeks but my body…and my liver…can’t handle it anymore.
No web-safe fonts look good, dammit.
