For those of you who watched the Grammys on Sunday night, you will have undoubtedly seen the performance by Justin Timberlake with the girl that won the audience vote of Ain’t No Sunshine. Now this wasn’t the first time I’ve heard this song but it’s been covered so many times that I had no idea which was the original and I’m damn well not going to be like those kids that think Puff Daddy sang “Every Breath You Take”.
The original, recorded in 1972, was by Bill Withers, who also gave us Lovely Day and Just the Two of Us. Here he is singing Ain’t No Sunshine on British TV back in ‘72. What surprised me was…songs were like two minutes long back then.
