Are There Any Useful iPhone Apps?

by Ed Lau on February 7, 2009

Seriously.

By now, if you’ve seen the last Dot Com Pho video, you might’ve seen a iPhone swordfight between iPhone Gary and Buzz Bishop using an app called iFight. Unfortunately, these are the sorts of apps we usually come into contact with on the iPhone and amazingly, a lot of people actually download these. I mean, John has all kinds of fart apps and virtual beer apps on his iPhone and I’m almost sure Gary is going to come up with something that is going to trump iFight in terms of uselessness.

I’m saying this because I recently reformatted my phone after doing the latest firmware update and jailbreak and I couldn’t, for the life of me, remember what apps I had on my phone. I attribute this to the fact that a great majority of the apps I had installed (usually on the recommendation of one of the aforementioned people) were just entirely useless. Short of Twitterfon and PDAnet, I couldn’t think of any other applications I used on a regular basis that weren’t installed already as a part of the standard iPhone package.

So I pose this question to you…what apps do you have on your iPhone that you actually find useful? And if you find the fart app useful then…well, I can’t help you.

Even after the update, aren’t your downloaded apps shown in iTunes? You can just tick off the ones you want reinstalled again.

As for useful apps, it really depends on paid vs free apps. Those useless apps are just free novelty items for little giggles. Facebook, Google Mobile, Corus Radio, Fring, Urbanspoon, Shazam, Movies, 1Password, ScoreMobile, The Hockey News, Apple Remote, TwitterFon and WeatherEye are some useful free apps.

If you are looking into paid apps, OmniFocus and Things work amazingly well with their Mac counterparts. I know lots of people love Tweetie, Beejive, Keynote Remote and others to name a few.

As for jailbroken apps, QIK, PDAnet, and Winterboard rule the crop. In the end it really depends on what you want to use your iPhone for. I think iFight is the only app you need. Get it while it’s still free!! LOL

Somehow, I expect Stephen to chime in here with his love for all things RIM.

The fact that you have to go looking for something useful to do with your iPhone says it all. I rest my case. LOL
