Awesome New Trailers for 300 and More

by Ed Lau on December 8, 2006

I’ve always loved movie trailers. I always go to the theater a little early if I can help it so I can get a good seat but also because I love watching the previews. It’s a little strange. The trailers are sometimes even better than the actual movie. Trailers are a condensed version of the movie, smashing together all the good stuff without any of the crap, mixing it with some seriously dramatic music and alluding to but not giving away the plot points.

Some examples of a trailer that’s better than the movie is Jarhead, which we have playing on a screen at work. The trailer, not the movie. For anyone who has seen the movie, you’d know about the complete lack of action in the whole thing. I mean, the movie is basically about soldiers that sat on their ass during Desert Storm. I’m not saying it wasn’t a good movie but the trailer…I mean, it had tons of fast cutting flashes of action mixed with Kanye West’s Jesus Walks. It looks epic.

A new trailer for 300 was released yesterday and it makes me even more excited for this movie. I can think of few things more badass than 300 dude taking on a million. Obviously they’ll get slaughtered but the bravery that it takes to march your ass into certain death and take as many of those bastards as you can with you is freakin’ awesome. And it looks like they’ll be taking a lot since the trailer shows a giant pile of dead guys at the feet of the Spartans. I’m also a huge fan of the films style, which looks absolutely beautiful. It’s very different from the monochrome + red of Sin City but the style is very similar with the saturation and intense contrast with warm and cool filters. I can’t wait for this film in all it’s slow-motion goodness.

Another movie that looks great is The Number 23, starring Jim Carrey. While many of us remember him talking out of his ass in Ace Ventura but it’s when he brings a subdued, subtle performance that he’s at his best. He is seriously underrated as a dramatic actor. The film deals with a serious paranoia that overcomes Carrey after he reads a book and sees 23 everywhere. It looks pretty weird but interestingly freaky. It also stars Virginia Madsen who I thought gave an amazing performance in Sideways but was overshadowed by an even better one from Paul Giamatti.

I finished my first exam today so I think I will watch An Inconvenient Truth sometime this weekend and post my thoughts on it later.

Jim Carey is one of my favourite actors. Eternal Sunshine was amazing; one of my all-time favourite movies as well :)
