Blizzard’s New Game Will Be Starcraft 2

by Ed Lau on May 18, 2007

After a couple weeks of speculation, Blizzard made the official announcement in South Korea today. Mike Morhaime took the stage minutes ago (it’s 11:05pm PST) to announce that the new game will be Starcraft 2.

They’ve been trying to throw us off all week with their teaser campaign, with starcraft2.com and diablo3.com all pointing to their site. I know we were all trying to guess what it would be but could it really be anything but a Starcraft game? I mean, they announced it in Korea where they still play that game, which just passed it’s ninth birthday. I don’t think I own anything from nine years ago.

Given the massive Starcraft fan base, there’s almost no way Blizzard can screw this up. However, I think for it to be a serious success, they need to do something seriously new, which is a bit difficult since just about everything you can think of for RTS games has already been done. If I remember correctly, Starcraft was the first game with three playable races. I’m not sure what Blizzard can do differently this time but given their track record, it would be foolish to bet against them.

I’m told by my spies that Hyori Lee was performing at the Blizzard event. Hell, screw the games…I’d go there just to watch her. For those of you who are unaware of who Hyolee is…

Yeah, you can pick up your jaws now.

UPDATE: Here’s the best video I can find of the Starcraft 2 teaser. It shows a Terran soldier with glimpses of Kerrigan and the Zerg.

Charles Onyett of IGN reports:

Had to run out of conference room to plug in laptop – there’s an hour long information session starting in about 30 minutes – don’t know if there’s an internet connection there so I might not be able to update until i get back. As for initial StarCraft 2 impressions – the game looked very similar to SC1 – nearly identical user interface – graphic styles and unit proportions nearly the same – more flashy lighting effects but it seems like Blizzard didn’t want to mess with SC’s underlying formula very much. The screens they showed the video on didn’t display the video very clearly, unfortunately, but the game still looked pretty with some nice animations. We’ll have to wait to bring you any updates on what kind of story elements are in SC2 – hopefully they’re in the panel discussion. Anyway, gotta run – thanks for reading and we’ll update as soon as possible.

They also have some screenies but the site is getting hammered so it might be real slow.

It looks like the scale of the game is pretty huge. That’s gotta be at least a hundred Zerglings right there. Hopefully they removed all those unit limits and such so you can have a thousand units up at the same time. The graphics aren’t shabby but they’re also not particularly mind blowing. I was hoping for a bit more. The interface looks almost exactly the same. Hopefully everything will be more polished with a new look by the time the game goes into production.

I’ll probably play it through anyways just to see what happens. Personally, I think Blizzard’s storytelling skills are underrated. It’s always pretty good quality entertainment and the backstories are usually done quite well.

Still would have been nice to have Diablo 3 though… I’ll wait and see on Starcraft 2.
