Have you ever watched a movie and realized “What the hell…this is like what I do all the time…”

Of course, you’re probably thinking this happens when I watch Superman but in fact, the other day, I realized Clerks is basically about me and some of my co-workers. A couple of my friends have been telling me I should watch Clerks for the longest time but, in typical me fashion, I always forgot since I didn’t know how absurdly awesome it was.

It’s not just the blatant and excessive amount of slacking at a stupid day job or the spot-on encounters with customers. It’s not even the insane things you start doing at work out of boredom (I spent an entire day showing customers and other co-workers products pointing them out by thrusting at them with my groin) It’s the ridiculous conversations you eventually have about complete nonsense such as, for us, how to survive a zombie outbreak or, in the case of the movie, the socio-economics of Star Wars.

It’s a low-budget, black-and-white film which probably isn’t for folks who are seriously offended by “colorful” language but it is probably one of the most hilarious movies I’ve seen. There really isn’t much of a plot but the dialogue is what drives the film. If you’re a fan of other Kevin Smith films like the brilliant Dogma or Mallrats and you haven’t, for some reason, seen Clerks, I highly recommend you go rent a copy. The only way it could’ve been better would’ve been if somehow Lando Calrissian was in it.

It’s a wonderfully authentic film, documenting an entire work day…if you could really call what they did work. They really got the idiot customers right, including a guy that asks Randall “Do you have that one with that guy who was in that movie last year?” I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been asked equally idiotic questions by…well, idiots. I assure you, this movie will speak to anyone that has ever worked retail.

I think the first time I saw Clerks was in 1995 - and I instantly became a Kevin Smith fan!! I really love all of his movies (yes, even Mallrats)!

Did you get a chance to watch the alternate ending?

This whole series is awesome. You forgot mention the classic, though. MALLRATS!

Clerks is a classic but for me “Office Space” most sums up my work misery.
