DC Comics x BAPE Batman Hoodie – Awesome or Not #1

by Ed Lau on June 18, 2007

I’m not sure how to explain this but I decided to try out a little thing here called “Awesome or Not” where I pick, well, stuff and determine whether or not it is, in fact, awesome. It will usually be random cultural observations or new products. While other sites may attempt to determine whether things will blend, float or blow up, I’m going to tell you how awesomet things are. Bear with me since I’m on all kinds of weird medication for my knee injury. I’m almost sure I wasn’t supposed to take that many of the blue ones…

It’s difficult to explain the concept of awesome but I think of it as an x-factor, a quality that certain things have that make it special. Something or someone that you point to and just say “Oh hells yes!”. Awesome stuff makes women throw their undergarments and can make grown men weep. While stuff that’s good is usually somewhat awesome, it isn’t usually the case. 300 is, of course, freakin’ awesome as well as good but, say, a Blackberry is a very useful tool but the second you use it, you look like a jackass and therefore, cannot be awesome. It has to have character and can never take anything too seriously. Hell, sometimes things will just be awesome for some barely explainable reason. Bob Barker, for example, is awesome not because of his 35 great years of The Price Is Right but because he once beat the living crap out of Adam Sandler and called him a bitch.

That’s my definition of awesome. You may have a different one and hey, that’s great. Feel free to disagree and tell me why but…that’s my name up there so I’ll always give my own opinion. I usually try to purchase things based on their awesomeness. My wall art, for example, was purchased solely because they are awesome.

First up is a hoodie I saw on the weekend that caught my eye. It’s a collaboration between DC Comics and A Bathing Ape, which still makes some seriously funky clothing including my full zip Shark. This one is also a full zip and is modeled after the Caped Crusader himself. DC Comics x BAPE do get some awesome points for modeling it after the Adam West Batman because, quite simply, Adam West is also awesome. If it was any of the “modern” Batman getups, especially god-forbid the weird…nipple suit worn by George Clooney in that one with Arnold, then it would’ve been in the completely not awesome bin a long time ago.

There are a few things that aren’t looking good for the Bat-Hoodie…including the Bat-Hoodie. There’s no rule that says stupid looking stuff can’t be awesome because my Shark hoodie looks ridiculously stupid but it’s awesome because there are relatively few of them and it starts conversations by itself. It has character and while it is on the milder side of the awesome scale, it’s still there. The Bat-Hoodie, however, is not as it looks like a halloween costume. If you buy this, some 10-year old kid wearing a ten dollar Batman shirt from Wal-Mart is going to point at your, probably, six hundred dollar hoodie and say “Cool..but it’s not Halloween yet, dummy!”. You’re going to feel like an ass.

It’s almost awesome by association due to the connection to Adam West but sadly, it’s just not up to par.

It looks kinda cool, but the instant it’s zipped all the way up with bat ears showing, it looks like ass. Novelty only goes so far…

I like your sharky one a LOT better.

“..a Blackberry is a very useful tool but the second you use it, you look like a jackass and therefore, cannot be awesome.”

This is so bloody true! I will read your blog more often based just on that comment alone. =D
