the.[ED]ition

Apparently Wally’s Burgers, a local Vancouver landmark open since 1962, is closing at the end of the month. It’s one of the last remaining pieces of the neon lights and drive-ins of the ’60s that was so common on Kingsway. However, the landlord has chosen not to renew the lease on the old school burger joint and Wally’s will be gone soon. When we heard about this, we knew we had to take our Saturday Dot Com lunch to Wally’s.

The Wally’s Deluxe Wagon is the main attraction here, a slightly larger bun stuffed with two patties, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, mayo and some “Wally’s Special Relish”. It is a seriously tasty burger and a great deal at only $4.05. You can actually get other burgers at Wally’s for as little as two bucks but heck, why wouldn’t you order the best one?

I just had the burger but there were some sides of curly fries and jalapeño poppers on the table. Michael was particularly perplexed by the sheer length and curliness of this fry.

Stephen and Leo actually went to Wally’s earlier in the week already and wanted to have lunch on Saturday at Tops Restaurant instead. However, the rest of us wanted to go to Wally’s since we haven’t been in forever (or ever in some cases). This made Leo a sad panda.

Although the Wally’s Deluxe Wagon is quite big already, I was particularly hungry so when Stephen suggested we walk over to Tops and get one of their burgers as well, I was up for the challenge as were Greg and Leo. John and Danny thought we were all insane and had soup instead. Since I didn’t get the milkshake at Wally’s, I (and just about everyone else) opted for a cappuccino milkshake at Top’s. Leo was especially happy with his.

The Super Burger at Tops is massive, consisting of two 5oz sirloin patties, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, red onions and a fried egg.

Since I wanted to maintain some…uh…regularity, I chose to have a salad instead of fries with mine. I wasn’t prepared for the enormity of it all, really, and ate only half, packing the rest for later. Leo and Greg did the same but Stephen, being the freakin’ beast that he is, ate the whole thing…AND the entire freakin’ plate of fries.

While the Super Burger at Tops was quite tasty and the patties were superb, I actually enjoyed the burger at Wally’s more. I’m not sure if this is because I was full halfway through my Super Burger or that it was such a mess, we went through a huge stack of napkins or if it was simply because I didn’t have to stretch my jaws to get them around the Deluxe Wagon at Wally’s but I just liked the Deluxe Wagon better. At $12.99, I would probably opt for three Wally’s Deluxe Wagons than one Tops Super Burger. There’s just too much in it…although I wouldn’t mind swapping the onions for some mushrooms since the sirloin patties are delicious.

Too bad Wally’s won’t be around much longer, though. I’ll probably grab one more burger before they close at the end of the month.
