Dot Com Pho – The iPad Edition

by Ed Lau on April 11, 2010

As you may have heard (especially if you follow me on Twitter), several of us here at Dot Com Pho have receieved our iPads. So far, the overall opinion is positive…that they are fun devices to play with and have a lot of great features but for power users like us, they won’t replace an actual laptop. They are great for reading the news, a book or a website (one that isn’t build on Flash…) but there are certainly limitations to the design, feature set and currently available apps. However, the iPad has sort of exceeded our expectations in terms of battery life and ease of use. I’m typing all of this on it right now with the on-screen keyboard and other than the lack of apostrophes in the correct spot, I’m having no difficulty typing quickly. It’s mostly business as usual apart from the lack of tactile response. Look for a more in-depth post on the iPad in the coming week.

For now, check out this week’s episode of Dot Com Pho where we discuss John‘s new book (I took the picture of him on the back!), look at our fun new toys and I get weirded out by some old dude talking to John and I at Blenz.

Do you find it’s easier to type with the iPad flat on a surface (using it like a keyboard) or holding it in your hands like how you would with an iPhone? I’m thinking it’s the former, yes?

I demonstrated at pho yesterday that unlike a lot of people, apparently, I have no problem typing quickly with it horizontal on a flat surface. I can also type pretty quickly holding it vertical like an iPhone. Holding it horizontal while typing with your thumbs is tricky, though.

It felt like an eternity already. Dude was spewing nonsense half the time and the other half was spent in deep conversation…with himself.

Lol, that would’ve been worth seeing, I’d say.
