Fallout 3, Weeks Later

by Ed Lau on December 26, 2008

The Christmas break has given me time to catch up with Fallout 3. I haven’t really played it since the first couple days I got it weeks ago. It’s not that I haven’t had time to play video games at all but, well, Fallout 3 requires more mental thought than shooting zombies in the face in Left 4 Dead, for example. It’s not that you don’t do a lot of shooting zombies in the face in Fallout 3 but there’s more involved with the game than simply doing so.

In fact, it’s actually quite a drain to play the game at all. Not that it isn’t fun because I’m rather sure this is one of the best games I’ve played in a long time but because of the state of the post-apocalyptic wasteland, it’s sorta stressful to look at it all the time. The entire Fallout universe takes on a much more disgusting and just generally uncomfortable feeling in first person with 2008 graphics that it’s tough to stare at it for a long period of time.

However, the quests are fun and exploring the surface and encountering random NPCs is a blast. I’m less of a fan of heading into buildings and sewers due to the aforementioned overall ugliness of the environment. If we compare this to Bethesda’s previous triumph Oblivion, there are also times when the world looked incredibly ugly but it looked bright and appealing at times too. I guess it’s a compliment to Bethesda’s artwork and development that makes Fallout 3 look and feel like a real post-nuclear hellhole.

I’m probably about halfway through the game now and I’ve got some minor gripes about how hard things are to find but otherwise, I must say there are fewer gaming experiences more satisfying than dropping a mini-nuke onto a group of super mutants and watching their ashes suspend in mid-air or letting the lead spray out of a minigun at a squad of slavers.

If you can get over how grimy and gross the entire environment is…seriously going into any building is just uncomfortable…then I highly recommend this game.

Fallout 3 is a great game, but ends abruptly. I recommend wandering around picking up side quests before following the main story much further.
