Visiting Union Gospel Mission
John Chow, Stephen Fung, Greg Morgan and I were invited down to UGM today to have some lunch and hear about some of the new stuff they’ve been doing lately. We’re always glad to go down to UGM as well as help them raise some funds to help folks in need over the holidays.

The weirdest thing happened today.
I went downtown to check out the Mac stores in Yaletown, since no one really sells any Mac accessories in big stores. On my way back, just as I was getting on the bridge, I was stopped by a couple cops doing a road block on the on-ramp.
Now, when you have a motoring history like mine, the words “Oh…#%*& me…” are running through your head as you roll your window down. The officer was your average cop, probably in his late 30’s to 40’s, walking up to my car, doing what I concluded had to be looking for things to ticket me for. Right then, I was thinking what on earth I could be in violation of. I no longer had any front window tint (which I’ll put back on later) and since it was on on-ramp, I physically could not have been speeding…especially in rush hour traffic. I was a bit worried but…dude, there’s no way I did anything wrong this time. For once, I wasn’t breaking any sort of traffic law.
“How are you today, officer?”
“…are those CR Kai’s you have there?”
It took a few seconds of blank stare for me to realize what the hell he was talking about. Turns out the guy pulled me over…to talk about my rims.
“Yes, sir.”
“Yeah, do you mind if I ask what you paid for those? I’m trying to get a set off a guy on Craigslist.”
Seriously, the cop just wanted to talk about cars. Turns out he also drove a Mazda 3 and liked the look of mine. I was probably pulled over there on the side of an on-ramp for a good 10-15 minutes talking to a police officer about cars. If you happened to be held up in traffic by a black Mazda 3 this afternoon getting onto the Granville St. bridge, my apologies.
Well, this is certainly one of the weirder encounters I’ve had with law enforcement but hey, at least I didn’t get a ticket.

You’re SOOOO lucky. I would have busted your ass!
ReplyAlthough it’s good that you didn’t get in trouble for anything, isn’t that abuse of power on the part of the officer? He used his authority to pull you over, just so that he could talk about your rims?
ReplyHe should have given you a ticket for driving a Mazda!
ReplyJust move to NYC as I did. Then you have to sell your car, and wala…no more payments.
ReplyAh, figures that a cop would drive a Mazda 3.
ReplyHehe, now that’s a funny story.
ReplyWOW…just WOW…you’re one lucky man Ed lol
