Girl Talk – Night Ripper

by Ed Lau on December 30, 2006

It turns out that the hottest tracks I’ve heard all year are the ones that I discover right at the end of the year.

Night Ripper by Girl Talk (a.k.a. Gregg Gillis) is a DJ mash-up of all kinds of music, mostly recent but also digging up some retro classics like Black Sheep – The Choice is Yours.  Ever wondered what The Whisper Song sounds like when it’s mixed with Bittersweet Symphony?  How about a Notorious B.I.G. duet with Britney Spears?  Elastica with Stevie Wonder?  Crack rap over the O.C. theme song?  That’s what I thought.

Things start up hot and raw with Once Again and stay that way right to the end of the disc.  There are no pauses, no transitions…if it didn’t have tracks, you’d think it was just one straight up 40-plus minute mix.  It freakin’ assaults your ears and you’ll wish there was more.  That’s my only complaint, really…that there isn’t more of it.  It seems like everytime he hits a high with an incredible mix, it’s over already.  Just when you think you understand, he goes off on a tagent and never comes back.  You almost wish that he remixed tracks more often.

Play this CD at your NYE party and just watch people get their freak on.  It’ll blow your freakin’ mind.
