Seriously, is there anything that Google isn’t getting into?
|
British newspaper The Observer reported on Sunday that Google is talking with orange, a large mobile phone company in Europe and Asia, about creating some kind of ‘Google phone’. There aren’t really too many details since it’s rather early but they say the phone will ‘make it easy to search the web wherever you are.’
Of course, many of us already have WAP-enabled, internet capable phones already and there are certainly a lot of PDA phones on the market which allow us to use Google and many other websites, however stripped down the mobile versions may be. This deal would be more significant in terms of branding and accelerating the process of cheaper, faster mobile internet. Currently, web surfing on your phone is not all that practical in terms of speed or cost as even a small amount of bandwidth usually costs as much as a month of airtime. The article says that Google is doing research on data compression for mobile phones and a deal with orange could only help the process.
A source close to the talks told The Observer: ‘Google are software experts and are doing some amazing work compressing data so that the mobile user gets a much better experience. They don’t know so much about mobiles, but they are eager to learn from Orange’s years of experience.’
If this seriously goes into the works, will someone tell Google to make a deal with Samsung? No one else makes decent looking mobile phones…

Two notes:
1. This supposed “Googlephone” is said to be made by HTC.
2. Google is also working on a deal with Apple (the latter has inked a deal with Orange as well, providing MacBooks to Orange’s DSL users)
Google is everywhere alright. Good on them, as long as they keep innovating (and therefore encouraging further innovation from competitors) I think its a good thing.
