Google Street View Comes To Vancouver

by Ed Lau on October 10, 2009

It seemed strange to me that I could find my tiny apartment in the suburbs of Tokyo but I couldn’t find my house in Richmond on Google Streetview. Well, this week, Google finally got around to covering us with their awesome Street View program. If you’ve never played around with the Street View option in Google Maps, you’ll probably end up wasting hours upon hours. My friends and I spent nearly an entire day once looking at our entire backpacking trip in Europe (6 weeks in France, Belgium, Amsterdam, Germany, Italy, Austria, and the UK, including World Cup 2006!) on Street View.

A few other Canadian cities, Squamish, Whistler, Banff, Calgary, Kitchener/Waterloo, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec, have also been included in this latest update. I haven’t found anything funny happening so far on the Vancouver one but since the Google van drove by during the Canucks playoff run last year, it is almost certain that everyone was inside watching the game rather than looking for a van with a giant camera on it.

It’s been pretty fun to play with! I can see my bro’s car parked outside the house. At the same time, Google updated their Windows Mobile app, and it is freaking awesome!

Still no Street View in Hong Kong, or Kyoto for that matter. :(

I was really disappointed with the execution – the Vancouver shots are pretty high-res from what I can tell, but they’re not mapped properly.

Example: My block (and my grandparents) in east vancouver looks fine in parts, but as you’re going down the street it automatically switches into the lane.

For some reason they snapped pictures of every lane as well and those are being stitched in as the regular street. So half the houses on my block you can only view the back of. Extremely stupid.

A bunch of people are saying they experience the same thing in parts, which is extremely stupid. Hopefully Google fixes it – but I can’t find a form to submit errors.
