I mentioned months ago that there were rumors of a Google Phone. Since then, said rumors were confirmed by Google execs and suddenly, the iPhone had a competitor, which is a bit funny when you consider neither has actually in public hands.
There aren’t many details available yet, although Engadget reported that despite early speculation, the Google Phone (which apparently is called the Google Switch), will be made with Samsung and not HTC or Alpha Networks. Personally, I thought this was great news since I think Samsung is the only company that makes phones stylish enough for me to want to use. In fact, me and my Dot Com comrades Michael Kwan and Greg Morgan all use the same Samsung SGH-D900. I’ve been using Samsung’s for years, although I briefly owned a Motorola RAZR when it was still new, hot and cost $600. Yes, I was quite disappointed that it was mass produced and given to everyone and their grandmas for $99 six months later. But I digress.
Anyways, one of the biggest gripes many critics have had with the iPhone is the fact that it doesn’t not support any sort of third party software. Despite the fact the iPhone just oozes awesome, I do happen to like to customize my mobile. If Google gets this part right and they let Samsung do the design, Apple might have a serious competitor. The “spy-shots” on Engadget are blurry but that thin-bezeled, touchscreen design is perfectly simple and sophisticated. It looks to be about the size of an iPod which is a bit large but it also looks very thin. I love it but hey, until there are some official photos, let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
There should be an announcement from Google regarding the phone in a week or two if not sooner.

That graphic just doesn’t make it for me. Personally I don’t think so.
iPhone might be as versatile as any Mac, and you might have lots of 3rd party customizing. that remains to be seen.
and that google phone rumor reminds me of the iGoogle or GoogleTv rumor that was going around several months ago. total fabrication.
Nevertheless I faved you, Ed lau.

I don’t get this one, unless you have to view some AdWords ads before being able to dial or answer a call.
If google came out with that phone … I would be all over it!
That would be great!

I love hacking my phone too! My LG VX-8100 is super custom!!
dude I don’t know, nokia has a prototype of a usual cellphone but it looks damn sexy google for nokia aeon and you’ll see what I’m talking about.
Also it has dual touch screens so it can switch from numpads to a keyboard to nothing.
Anyways that’s what I’m preying for to become reality, otherwise I’d have to beg someone to sell the prototype heheh.
