Granville Island

Vancouver has a lot to offer but I think one of the coolest places in town is Granville Island. It wasn’t always this way, really. Years ago, it was a really run down industrial park but since, it’s become the cultural center of Vancouver. It’s home to some really great cafes but mostly, it’s artist town with the Emily Carr Institute and lots of art supply shops and galleries. There’s also the Granville Island Brewery and a couple small theaters and comedy clubs.

Oh, and the public market. Unlike the one in Richmond that makes you feel like you’re in a crappier version of the Richmond Night Market, the Granville Island Public Market is full of fresh produce, meats, fresh fish and local fruits. In the summer, you can find all sorts of strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and various other…berries from local farmers. You can also find freshly baked breads (I bought a great focaccia col formaggio today) and another place sells fresh, handmade pasta and sauces. I plan on grabbing a jar of pesto from that place next time.

Everything around Granville Island looks clean and vibrant. There are still a few industrial buildings around but they’re off in the corners. All the other buildings are saturated with colors and looks bright even on wet, rainy days like this one. I’ll try to go back another time to give you a better idea of what the place looks like but it was getting close to rush hour and it was just pouring outside today. I was really just walking around trying to find something to try out a black and white assignment and this was as close as I got.

Good project, Ed. You should run around Vancouver and take black & white photos of homeless people. At least you’ll have LOTS of subjects.
