Not entirely sure why but I really wanted some Malaysian food on Monday. However, my go-to restaurant is always closed on Monday and I wasn’t aware of too many other ones so knowing he’s probably know the answer, I asked Chow Times on Twitter where I could find some good mee goreng, a fried noodle dish.
@edlau Our fav place for Mee Goreng is Hawkers Delight. Cheap too.

Strangely, I’ve never noticed Hawker’s Delight, despite being located across from a pho restaurant that we hold Dot Com Pho at damn near every week. However, it isn’t really difficult to see why. Hawker’s Delight is about the size of a closet with a handful of tables. You order off the menus on the wall and grab drinks yourself. Water and tea are both self-serve so don’t expect the staff to do anything apart from take your order and maybe bring your meal to your table.

I ordered the mee goreng, which was extremely good value at only $4.75. The girl at the counter asked if I wanted mild or spicy. I was tempted to get it spicy but knowing the spice level in most Malaysian, Indonesian and Singaporean cuisine, I asked for a mid-level degree of spiciness. Mild would just be boring.

It was a little different than I was expecting, to be honest. The noodles were nicely chewy and the dish had a nice heat to it. Not too spicy but it tasted different from what I usually get elsewhere. There was little meat in it and there were chunks of potato and bean sprouts. It was tasty but lacked variety of spice and flavor. I’m not from Malaysia nor have I ever been there so I’m not an authority on which is the authentic way of cooking this dish but I thought it was tasty and everything went together well. Portion-wise, it was slightly small but enough for lunch and when you consider the dish is less than $5, you’re still getting a lot for your money.

I tried to order some satays as well but I was informed that they either sold out or they didn’t have any. I couldn’t really tell which. Apparently at lunch hour, Hawker’s Delight gets very busy and the small dining area gets crammed with people. I know that some of my fellow bloggers have commented about the cleanliness of the restaurant as well but apart from the utensils (which you grab yourself) being sopping wet, I didn’t find too much to complain about. However, I’ve eaten at some rather…hole in the wall places in my travels so I’m not too picky when it comes to a restaurant being spotless.
With a can of Coke, my meal was just barely $6! That’s amazing…where in this city can you get a whole meal for that price anymore? I’ll have to reserve a real judgment on Hawker’s Delight until I’ve tried more of their dishes…and I definitely will with value that good.

“That’s amazing…where in this city can you get a whole meal for that price anymore?” A banh mi joint?
Hawkers Delight is pretty awesome. You should try their nasi goreng, also at a medium-level of spiciness. The satays aren’t bad either and, get this, they used to be cheaper. It wasn’t that long ago that I was able to get my nasi goreng for, I think, $3.75.
I’ve never had goreng; noodle dish? It looks delish!
And @ a very reasonable price too.
I remember when they were just starting out. Their prices were so unbelievably low that I wondered if they were profitable enough to last. Don’t miss the the laksa!
