Heading to the Nagoya Sumo Tournament
July 22nd, 2008 by Ed Lau |
My apologies for the relatively few updates lately as I came to Nagoya a couple days ago. The good news is that since it is further west and less populated than Tokyo, the air here feels fresher and cleaner. However, I’m not sure why but it also seems to be a few degrees hotter here so I’m dead tired after being out there in the scorching sun.
One of the six (I think) sumo tournaments each year takes place here in Nagoya so I thought it would be a good chance to see it and maybe check out what else is in the city. The FAQ on the official site says that there’s no restrictions on cameras so hopefully I’ll get some good shots of the rikishi laying the smack down.

I don’t know anything about sumo other than how to do the moves for E. Honda in Street Fighter II. I hope there’s some sort of pamphlet to tell me what’s going on since I hear it’s not just all about pushing the other dude out of the ring.

i saw that one dude from Turkey (??) all over the news before i left. is he gonna be there?
I watched a sumo tournament in Vancouver like 10 years ago. It was a lot of fun… just be prepared for a lot of non-action. Before the match actually begins, the two guys will line up on their spots and sorta try and “psych out” their opponents. They’ll look like they’re getting ready to start and then they’ll stand up, have a stare down, and walk away.
That was actually quite enjoyable as each rikishi has certain interesting personality traits like one guy is able to raise his leg higher than everyone (almost straight up in the air…like the splits) and a couple guys throw salt into the ring in a crazy way.
