Hitman: Codename 47 Movie Begins Filming

by Ed Lau on April 4, 2007

Some of the best, most innovative games in the last…well, ever, are the Hitman series, which put you in the immaculate suit of one Agent 47. 47 is the perfect killer, a genetically engineered man with few morals and a unmatched skill for making people die. It may sound twisted and sick but one of the best experiences in gaming is when you can get to your target entirely undetected, kill him and leave absolutely no signs that you were ever there. Achieving the rank of Silent Assassin in any of the games (although I believe the second was the pinnacle of the series) is one of the toughest things you can do in any game. It takes serious planning, patience and self-control. Self-control because you can, of course, go through the door, guns blazing but it’s much more satisfying to infiltrate without detection and walk out the front door when you’re done.

To this day, my absolute favorite part of any game is the Malaysian level of Hitman 2 where you have to sneak to the basement to kill a programmer. As I mentioned, you could just simply walk through the front door with a M4A1 and blast everyone. It’s difficult but I’ve done it that way too but it’s a sensation to sneak through the security infested lobby and make your way to the basement, where you swing a nearby fire ax into the dude before he even knows you’re there. Heck, I didn’t even bring a gun. You feel like you just outsmarted everyone…you’re unstoppable. 47 is possibly the coolest dude ever. He’s always calm, precise and efficient.

Anyways, you can imagine my excitement when I had heard they were going to make a movie based on 47′s story. While there are already some absolutely great assassin movies, there’s always room for one more. Leon The Professional, for example, is one of my all time favorite movies. However, I was disappointed that Vin Diesel was supposed to play 47. He had the sort of face 47 has but Vin Diesel was too big to play the lanky assassin and his voice didn’t really fit. However, I could be wrong and maybe he would be awesome at the role. While I could get onboard with Toretto playing 47, I was horrified when I heard that Uwe Boll would be directing. Yes, the man that made such masterpieces as Alone in the Dark and House of the Dead was to direct the movie based on my favorite game.

For those of you who haven’t heard of Uwe Boll, he’s made a career making movies based on video games. However, not one of his movies has ever been good. Heck, none of them have even been mediocre…or even bad. They can only be described as “catastrophic” and “giant steaming piles of goat crap”. A friend once told me he rented Alone in the Dark in order to copy it but once he saw it, he couldn’t even be bothered to pirate it. That’s how bad it was…

The good news is that neither Vin Diesel nor Boll were still on board for Hitman when it started filming this week. 47 is now played by Timothy Olyphant, probably best known for his role in Girl Next Door (with Elisha Cuthbert…yeah, I know you watched it for Elisha…) or Deadwood. The other good news is that Frenchman Luc Besson is producing the film and he’s made some great assassin flicks, including the aforementioned Leon The Professional. French director Xavier Gens will be directing the project. Oh, Dougray Scott and Robert Knepper (also known as T-bag from Prison Break) also have roles in Hitman.

I do love a good assassin movie… Leon the Professional is by far the best! I haven’t played Hitman but I’ll look forward to watching it.

You don’t think it takes self-control to be a sniper? You could be waiting days for the perfect shot.

Danielle: Hitman isn’t a FPS really. It’s a third person game…and there’s not even that much…shooting…unless you want to play like that, which isn’t fun.
