How to Shop Like a Dude

Posted on February 25th, 2007 by Ed Lau

Ever had one of those days when you go home at 4pm and realize you could really use a nap? It’s not like I was out digging a ditch or coal mining this morning either. In fact, it was a rather relaxing day despite the anger I experienced that Jan Bulis threw away a game for the Canucks. After lunch, I spent a good few hours around Vancouver shopping, picking up a few things including a hoodie from American Apparel. I enjoy shopping more than most guys but hey, if you don’t buy stuff…what real good is money anyways?

However, there is a real difference in the way that men and women shop. Despite the fact that I spent almost three hours shopping, I covered most of Vancouver in that time, meaning not just one mall but many stores all over the city. Heck, Livestock is probably as far from Lacoste at Oakridge as possible. Most women can only cover one department store in the same amount of time.

The difference is in the method of shopping. Us men will only look at stuff in stores where we would actually purchase something whereas women go in to stores often for no reason what so ever. Men shop with purpose and focus. For example, if I were to pick up a pair of jeans and like them, I might give them a try but if I don’t, I put them down and move on. Women will often try them on anyways and sometimes, even buy them just to return them later.

All in all, man shopping takes very little time at all. In fact, spending more than five minutes at any given store usually means you’re going to buy something as no dude is seriously going to look around for more than that. The only exception is when purchasing large electronics such as TVs or buying a car…and even then, it’s not because we need more time to look around but because it’s fun to play around with all the cool junk available.

What the heck was Jan Bulis thinking?

He jumps on the back of the one guy and goes for a ride and then goes after the goalie.

That guy should be sent down to the moose for the remainder of the year.

I’m one of those guys that scans a store in a few minutes, and in that scan session, decide whether to get anything I glanced at. I’d then go back to those items for a better look, and decide from them. Not dis-similar to the ladies’ route of looking at everything in the store, except that I can cover an aisle in the initial pass in seconds, compared to the usual minutes.
This has left me with the problem of walking behind female family members whom are still browsing the first bit of the store, in a place that I no longer have any interest in at all. A really quite boring experience.

As for the tech related stuff? I spend more time because usually to me [Electrical] > [Clothing] in terms of price, so therefore more time is actually worth it.

Then again, I have the quickest way of shopping for clothes: I can go to the counter immediately and ask if there’s anything in a specific size, and they will almost certainly say no, or show me the few items that are.
    Reason? I’m a lardass.
