I’m not sure if I’ve ever mentioned it but I’m studying sociology at the University of British Columbia. Today, however, it’s officially my major even though I’ve been doing it for the past three years anyways. Let me explain.

When I first entered post secondary, I was accepted to the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Arts. At the time, I thought I might want to do computer science but then I discovered how much programming sucks. I went into chemistry since it was always my forte in high school and did a chemistry major for three years. Heck, even right now I’m a year away from a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. Funny thing though, I got really bored with playing around in the lab and testing acidity or making things blow up so I quit doing it and quit UBC altogether for two years to go to college and take some arts courses to see what I enjoyed doing.

At Kwantlen, I started taking sociology classes and it’s stuck with me ever since. Personally, I’d rather write 25-page papers than do anything with math. I mean, you can’t bullshit your way through a chemical equation. Well, you can but you might subtract your own eyebrows by accident. Yes, I’m Asian and can’t do math…I know it’s strange.

When it was time to go back to UBC, they wouldn’t accept me to Arts, saying I could only go to Science. I thought this was absurd, really and truthfully, all this bureaucratic bullshit from what most people think is an institution of higher learning…well, it’s usually like this. People don’t seem to realize these places are here to make money and they don’t give a rats ass about us. I was beginning to think I would never graduate since I was in the wrong faculty and had all these arts credits building up.

Well, today I got an e-mail saying they had accepted my faculty transfer request and starting Friday, I’m officially an Arts student. This was quite a relief really. I hardly ever worry about anything but honestly, the prospect of wasting the past almost six years was daunting. I’m technically shy 19 credits from graduation but since some of those science credits don’t count, I’m actually short 30 credits, which is a full ten course school year, meaning I could graduate this time next year.

However, I’m not one to spend all my time every day studying. Seriously, I believe there are more important things in life, especially at this point when I’m young enough to have fun at university as well. That being said, I’ll probably divide the 30 credits, which usually takes one school year, into one an a half, taking 12 credits one term and then nine in the other two.

As for sociology, I honestly have no idea what sort of career that lines me up with. I’ve thought about going into a journalism program at another school or possibly going to the Emily Carr Institute or Focal Point for photography classes. Either way, that’s a year and a half off…so that’s something for Future Ed to worry about.

Sounds like you’re gearing up to be a career student. If you can afford that kind of lifestyle, I say go for it. School is actually fun when you don’t have to worry about marks.
