Similar thing just happened to my mom's computer (*looks at Stephen*). It won't boot up, informing me after a CHKDSK that some portion of the System folder is damaged and/or corrupted. It says that I can insert the Win XP CD to try and repair the missing file(s), but that ends up giving me the same damaged/corrupted message. Even reformatting fails.

Doesn't start or all or doesn't boot into the OS? I found that a simple CHKDSK repair all seems to do the trick just dandy in the latter cases.

This might be a good opportunity to buy a NAS (Network Attached Storage) device. When I bring home my pictures, I always import them to my NAS over the network and work from that. Then if my computers ever go down, anything important is always on that thing. I even run my outlook PST files from my NAS.
