Jackass Loses a Bet…and His Name

by Ed Lau on February 8, 2007

So as I drove to school this morning listening to the Jim Rome show, I was shocked with a story of such human idiocy, I wanted to drive into a telephone pole to make it stop. The Super Bowl, as you may or may not know, is the single biggest day in sports betting, with people betting on the winner, the spread, the coin toss, number of penalties, color of Gatorade dumped on the winning coach…you name it. While most humans bet in cash, one Bears fan took it a step further and bet that if Da Bears were not Super Bowl champions by Monday, he would legally change his name to Peyton Manning.

I struggled to comprehend the kind of idiot that would make such an incredibly stupid bet.

Scott Wiese, a die-hard Chicago Bears fan, will legally change his name to that of Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning after signing a pledge in front of a crowd at a Decatur bar last Friday night. He vowed to adopt Manning’s name if the Bears lost Sunday’s Super Bowl.

Seriously, let me get this straight. You put your name on the back of Rex-freakin’-Grossman. Granted it was Rex Grossman behind a very good Bears team but still….Rex Grossman! However, I must add that I’m curious as to what he would’ve won if the Bears happen to have won the game. If it wasn’t something freakin’ awesome, then this would possibly go down as one of the worst bets in history.
