Knocked Up Review

I’ve been meaning to check out Judd Apatow’s new comedy since I first heard about it but didn’t get around to it until a few days ago. Like The 40-Year Old Virgin before it, Knocked Up presents an interesting contradiction. It has enough mushy chick flick elements to keep the ladies happy while also providing enough dirty, R-rated innuendo and plenty of f-words to entertain the guys.

Knocked Up is the story of Ben (played by 40-Year Old Virgin alum Seth Rogan), a Vancouver native on and off screen and Alison, played by the stunningly hot Katherine Heigl, after a crazy drunk one night stand complete with unsafe sex. They’re a very mismatched pair as Alison is an up-and-coming television personality and Ben is a bum living off an insurance settlement and trying to make a website of when all the nude scenes are in movies with his gang of stoner friends (including Jason Siegel of How I Met Your Mother). She would probably never want to see him again but, she starts getting morning sickness. I’m guessing you can see where it goes from here.

The style is very much like The 40-Year Old Virgin and while the audience might not like Ben as much as Steve Carell’s Andy at first, Ben is sincere and genuine enough to win them over. Alison isn’t as crazy as you’d expect a pregnant woman to be. That trait in this movie is taken entirely by her sister Debbie (played by Leslie Mann, the drunk “French Toast” girl from Virgin) The simple fact that she’s with a guy that’s way below her hotness level will get the audiences’ sympathy. There’s plenty of Virgin, The Office and How I Met Your Mother cast members present in varying roles and everyone plays their role very well in this film, including a very memorable scene with Craig Robinson (Daryl from The Office) as the doorman of a club.

If you enjoy R-rated comedies like Virgin and Old School, you’ll love Knocked Up. Between hilarious explanations of doggie style, pink eye and tripping out on mushrooms in Vegas, there’s plenty of laughs to enjoy here. I gotta warn you though, if you’ve never seen one of those birth videos back in high school, you might want to…prepare yourself. Otherwise, a seriously enjoyable, funny summer movie for just about everyone.

Verdict: 8 out of 10

Hey! Let’s get this straight, Ed!
“Unsafe” and “Unprotected” sex are two COMPLETELY different things here ;)

Alright, just to clear things up, I don’t mean having sex suspended above a pool full of alligators in a cage that’s on fire while playing Russian roulette.

i saw the movie and i was WAY disappointed by it. first of all, i don’t like chick flicks. actually they usually disgust me. so the love story overtone made me slightly nauseous. second, i didn’t think seth rogan’s character was very strong, and lacked development, although kind of funny. i did love jay baruchel, but mainly just because he played vic munoz in almost famous. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0059431/
overall, it just makes me that much more eager to see evan almighty.

I could’ve done with less love story, more comedy too but I guess it was essential to make a marketable movie.

I’ve heard Evan Almighty blows though. Richard Roeper and the guest critic on Ebert and Roeper were…very, very adamant that it was one of the worst movies of the year.

Great movie - you can totally tell that the it was from the same director (or producer?) of 40 year old virgin. Favourite line: “What do you usually do on a 2nd date?” Or “It’s a STYLE. It’s not like I’m actually $%#%ing you like a DOG”. LOL :)
