The good news is that it looks like some shows are coming back into production early in the new year. The bad news is that they’re late night talk shows. I don’t know about you but I stopped watching late shows years ago when they, y’know, stopped being funny. They have their moments but I’d much rather see the return of The Office or How I Met Your Mother or hell, I’d settle for Prison Break even though I want to punch myself in brain ever time I watch that show.
Unlike other late night talk show hosts like Leno, Conan or Jimmy Kimmel, Letterman actually owns his show, meaning he can negotiate a contract with the writers even though there’s no end in sight for the overall writer’s strike. The other late night hosts will be back as well but without a writing staff to pen their monologues and skits.
It also remains to be seen if any guests will be willing to cross picket lines to appear on any of these shows. I don’t know how that’s going to work but again, let’s all hope for the writer’s strike to end soon. Reruns are killing the planet.
