Making your own background

Posted on November 12th, 2006 by Ed Lau

Ever seen something that would make a great pictures but the background is too cluttered, distracting or boring? Such was the case with this one.

I was waking up at 5am for a bike ride last winter, during Christmas vacation. The sun was barely up yet. As I passed by my dad’s minivan (he had driven my car to work) and noticed how the ice crystals that formed were…actually rather perfect. I took my camera out and started shooting but the grey-ish blue background was rather dull. The picture had no contrast to it. So I went back, dropped off my bike and grabbed the keys to the van, driving around in search of something that would look good in a reflection. The sun was rising by now so I thought, why not get the sunrise in the background.

The problem, of course, was finding a place where there was nothing but sunrise. Eventually, I found that the parking lot at the Richmond Christian High School was perfect, as there was a big open field behind it. The result was this.

That shot is pretty cool. What camera/lenses do you have? I’m picking up the Kiss Digital X (Canon XTi/400D) tomorrow along with the “nifty fifty” prime lens as my first dSLR setup. I plan to get the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 as my next lens.

Btw, it’s 250VTEC from RS. I’ve stumbled across your blog and SkinnyPupp’s from JohnChow.com…quite weird. Any other bloggers from RS??
