Man Makes Actual Laser Gun, But Is Probably Not From Future

by Ed Lau on March 12, 2011

I remember in 1989 that 6-year old me thought that by the time we hit the year 2000, there would be laser guns, hover shoes and cars that drive themselves. Unfortunately, here we are 11 years after Y2K hit and still we are using traditional projectiles, shoes that actually meet the floor and seriously no one has trained monkeys to the point where they can be named Alfred and chauffeur us around town. I’d even settle for a Jetsons version of the future where they say it’s 2062 and yet except for the fact that cars fly, it looks like 1952. If State Fairs from the ’50s have taught us anything, it’s that the future is now…or at least it should’ve been around now and yet when you look around, people still don’t have jetpacks.

Since he’s probably similarly frustrated that the future isn’t yet upon us, a man named Patrick Priebe has made his own laser gun. No, really…it’s a laser gun. It probably won’t kill anyone but it would probably hurt like hell getting shot with something that can put little tiny holes into bits of plastic, foam and metal. I also love that he styled it to look like what would happen if Judge Dread starred in Portal 2…with Robocop.

Better get working on a higher powered version of this. I’d like to put in an order for a half-dozen of those before the zombie apocalypse.

in rare cases, a cartoon will have large guns fire actual bullets, but still no realistic … Which makes a rattling sound suspiciously similar to a gun when she trembles

When I was a kid 20 years ago, I also thought maybe within a quarter century, we’d see flying cars and space age developments everywhere. I guess the huge spurt in advancement of technology that we saw in the 20th century has petered out somewhat as we’ve discovered most of the major unknowns for the time being.

I’m a big Star Wars fan. I can’t imagine one day having a Han Solo-type blaster be a reality…
