McDonald’s Freaks Me The Hell Out

Posted on December 14th, 2007 by Ed Lau

I’m not sure how many of you have seen the documentary Super Size Me but ever since I did, I’ve been afraid to eat anything from McDonald’s. Well, I admit I’ve had a few McNuggets here and there and the odd sausage McMuffin but otherwise, it’s been years since I’ve had a McDonald’s burger. It’s important to remember that this food is processed to maximize profit by extending their shelf life and to minimize cost rather than making the food actually…well, food. Even amongst fast food McDonald’s is rather bad for you but eating anything similar often is probably not a great idea.

I’ll be the first to admit that McDonald’s fries are damn tasty but have you ever wondered why they’re good? Yep, those flavors were cooked in a test tube…and check out the results of these “Frankenfries”.

Ewwwwww…

Admittedly, most of the burgers seemed to rot properly albeit taking a bit longer due to all the preservatives in McDonald’s food but that simply isn’t stuff we should be putting in our bodies. I’ve stayed away from fast food for awhile now and even when I’m in a serious hurry, I’ll grab sushi from a deli I know makes it the real way (rather than with a machine…and weird stuff).

Heck, cooking doesn’t take long either. I made this pan seared salmon fillet with broccoli, pesto linguine and some mushrooms for dinner tonight in under 20 minutes.

Man, those fries are going to haunt me…

Referring to the McDonald’s fries, in the video he says you have to wonder “Wow, what’s that doing in my stomach then?” Well, your stomach acid is going to break those things down without breaking a sweat. It’s like those eMail rumors that say that Coke is going to tear up your stomach lining because of what it does to a rusty nail. No one ever shows you what your stomach acid would do to a rusty nail!

The healthiness of fast food is open to debate, but this video focuses on the “ewww” factor rather than a true critical look.

I mean, I have tomatoes that I grew last summer. No preservatives, no chemicals, no refrigeration. Over a year later, they are still intact. Some a bit wrinkled, some look almost like they just came off the plant. Heck, raw potatoes will last for months and months without preservatives. A good number of foods will last for extended periods without preservatives. Perhaps we shouldn’t eat any of those?

Consider too that salt is a preservative (meats used to be salted for long-term storage), and McDonald’s burgers contain a lot of sodium. If that “hand-made” burger had lower salt content, then it’s understandable why it may not have lasted as long as the McDonald’s burgers. Doesn’t necessarily mean that McDonald’s burgers are full of unnatural preservatives as the video seems to suggest.

Bottom line is that, as with so many things, moderation is the key. Consider water. What’s more natural than pure water? Yet, you can die from water intoxication.

Oh, and water has a really, really long shelf life… ;-)

That is hilarious, I think the salt makes em last forever. I have found those McDonald fries under my car seat that have been that old and possibly older and Guess what, looks lke were still edible! LMAO
Ok, Guess I will not eat Mcdonald fries anymore………..Will be hard to though, they taste suprisingly good being that they have already been soaked in phermeldahide.

God I feel nauseous. Trying to eliminate McDonald’s. But once every 2-3 weeks I break down and it. Then I immediately feel sick afterwards. Maybe this video will help me stay strong and stay away from that crap.

Everybody likes to knock McDonald’s but who is really going to eat it everyday, 3 times a day!? If you do you deserve to be sick.
McDonald’s is successful because it’s quick, filling, convenient and relatively tasty. Especially considering how very little a meal costs.
