More pictures from my travels

Among my favorite pictures is this untitled image from my trip to Korea and Japan in the Winter of 2004. Despite what initial impressions would tell you, it is not a double exposure and in fact, there is very little manipulated at all. I admit that the grain is something I did because I thought it added character and a more surreal, mosaic-like appearance. But that’s all.

This was taken in a large food court on the third floor of mall in downtown Seoul. I was sitting a couple empty tables behind this couple, all of us sitting beside a huge panoramic window overlooking a busy intersection where hundreds if not thousands of people strolled below. Initially, I had absolutely no interest in them, really. I didn’t understand what they were saying nor did I really care. However, after I unsuccessfully tried to photograph the passerbys on the streets, I realized that their conversation had ended and they had been sitting there in silence for the last 15-20 minutes or so. Maybe longer since I distinctly remember my coffee getting cold.

I didn’t want to directly photograph them. I wasn’t really afraid of them noticing but really, it wasn’t a very interesting picture the way it looked in my viewfinder. However, I caught the young man’s eyes in the mirrored reflection, looking away from the girl. There was this…emotion between them at the table. It wasn’t anger. There was never any shouting or anything enough to get my attention. It was more of a…tension. They were looking away from each other, almost as if they just couldn’t bring themselves to speak to each other. As I said, this is one of my favorite images. It captivates me every time I look at it due to the mystery that the image suggests.
