Ed Lau, business card

In preparation for my trip, I thought it would be a good idea to print off a new batch of business cards so that folks I meet along the way will know how they can contact me. My philosophy when it comes to business cards is the old motto of “Less is more.” and going with a minimalist design. In my stack of business cards I’ve collected from colleagues, from PR reps at trade shows or just general people I meet…there are some seriously hideous and gaudy designs.

While it’s true that sometimes a wild design can get attention easily, if it isn’t done correctly or in the right context, it could seem unprofessional and tacky. For me, the ones that make an impact are simple and discrete. For example, in movies, I’m reminded of the one George Clooney gives to Matt Damon in Ocean’s Eleven that has only his name or the famous business card competition scene in American Psycho, where the most impressive one is also the most tasteful and understated.

John Chow seems to think my card is too plain but…I’m not taking advice from anyone whose cards misspell their own company name! What’s a “TTZMmedia”, by the way, John?

I think it’s too plain too. Did you get them printed at Unico or White Rock Print and Design?

Yup, it’s plain. Is it at least double sided with a logo on the flip side?

Despite all the haters…I actually like this design you’re going with :) It’s very simple and I love it!

I’d suggest that for the trip, think about doing something to the other side in another language if you are going abroad. If Japan, think about having it all in Hirigana/Katakana on the other side.

Just a thought…

Ed,

I have enjoyed reading your blog about your trip to China! I am a brand new Affiliate Marketer, getting ready to launch my full website with enough content to get properly indexed and launched and begin slowly and carefully monetizing.

Your travel stories are really fun to read, and I have travelled extensively as well, and as I was often invited to the ”extended security search’ while traveling as a Senior Broadcast Television Systems Design Engineer on Verizon’s Fiber to the premises project. I look forward to someday attending the PHO in Canada with John Chow and others. Respectfully, Nicholas Chase
