My Obsessive Thoughts

Posted on April 10th, 2007 by Ed Lau

I’ve been tagged by both Derrich and Gary Lee for another link bait post which lists my obsessions. In turn, I’ll tag five other bloggers when I’m done. So, in no particular order…

1. Hockey: I’ve said it many times, I live and die with the Vancouver Canucks but although I love the Canucks more than…well, lots of things…I also love hockey in general. I will ditch just about anything for a Canucks game. Other than football/soccer, rugby and perhaps American football, I consider it the only real sport in the world. Baseball is a game since it requires so little actual activity and basketball is full of overpaid ##%*s. Although we have had a few ugly incidents in recent months, hockey represents all the values I consider important. Brotherhood, teamwork, and good hardworking Canadians. It’s the fastest, most interesting sport and it amazes me that so few Americans watch it.

2. Photography: I love taking pictures, especially when I’m traveling or on the road. Not to blow my own horn but on occasion I’m quite good except I’m rubbish at most portrait work. Yes, unfortunately I probably won’t be working for Playboy unless everyone on their staff died. I come somewhere between the accountants and perhaps the janitor on the list of people they want taking their pictures. I’m good at automotive, travel and sports photography mostly.

3. Cars: There are very, very few things I’d rather do than drive very, very fast with some great music down an open mountain road with plenty of bends and corners. I swear there is nothing more thrilling than speed. I enjoy driving and just about everything about cars. Personally, I’d rather warm the crap out of the world than give up combustion engines because I don’t think I can live without the beautiful growl of something like a Aston Martin Vantage or a Challenge Stradale.

4. Entertainment: I have the attention span of a 11-year old boy. I’m already rather surprised that I’ve managed to blog once a day for the past five months. As such, I require constant entertainment whether it be movies, television, music, meeting interesting people, video games or whatever. I like…well, everything. I don’t like to confine myself to any single genre, really as long as it’s good.

5. Money: Making money is like a drug. Once you make some…you just want to make more. It’s one of the benefits of being friends of John Chow…you learn all kinds of weird and morally grey ways to make a buck. The same with spending it. Driving is an emotional high but so is blowing a huge amount of dough. If credit cards weren’t so convenient and beneficial, I’d pay for everything expensive in cash because putting down a giant pile of money is a great feeling.

There are more…I mean, I love food, gadgets and such but we only have so much time. So…let’s find five other people to tell us what their obsessions are that haven’t done it already. Let’s go with Michael Kwan, Gdog, Carl Nelson, King Nomar and John Chow.

You want to know why Americans don’t like hockey? It’s because American love the drama of the underdog . . . down one run, 2 outs, bottom of the 9th, limping to the plate - it’s gonna be a homerun! . . . 5 seconds left, down 3, hasn’t made one shot all night, it’s GOOD! . .. . 2 minutes left, down 4, 1 timeout left, TOUCHDOWN with 37 seconds on the clock!

No knock on hockey cuz I actually like going to a game once in a while, but even the announcers don’t know when the players gonna score . . . “ya bob, he just recovered from a serious knee SCCOOOORREEE!!!!! injury that might” . . . it’s just too random . . but i guess that’s why you have to pay attention!

btw . . i agree that bball has a bunch of overpaid $(*#$*&$, but try watching the Phoenix Suns once in a while to see how creative and fast paced bball can really be!

Y’know why the Suns are awesome? Because Steve Nash is on that team. He doesn’t whine, doesn’t bitch, doesn’t fight and plays with class…and he’s Canadian.

Hockey announcers in the States do suck…mostly because they don’t know how to follow hockey. If you want drama…the NY Islanders vs the NJ Devils on the weekend had the Devils tie with less than a second left…and then the game went to a breakaway shootout to determine who would get the final spot in the playoffs. This was with the Islanders having a rookie goalie in net after their star was injured.

“you learn all kinds of weird and morally grey ways to make a buck” that is probably one of my favorite lines on your blog so far…maybe because I can relate to it.

Another reason I dont think hockey is bit here in the US is because… well its kinda like golf, its very boring to watch on tv. I never gave two thoughts about hockey until I went to a minor league game and watched it in person. Then, I was hooked!! I only wish there was a pro team around my way to get involved with :(

You’re comparing hockey to golf?! There’s action in hockey!
Personally, I’m more of a soccer fan (but that’s probably cuz every Brazilian is one).

That’s why Hockey and Basketball are great! Football is so slow… five minutes of waiting for 30 seconds of action!

There is a lot of back-and-forth in Hockey and not a ton of scoring, I think that’s what he was referring too….
