You’re Not Saving Money…Calm The @#*% Down
We discussed this briefly at this weekend’s Dot Com Pho after we heard the news of a Walmart employee getting trampled to death and shootings breaking out over the Black Friday sales a couple days ago. Seriously, we all agreed that this was pure idiocy…not only for the tragic events that occurred but the [...]

I mentioned some time ago that I was accepted to ReviewMe after a good three months or so of snubbing me. Acceptance to the program is dependent on factors such as your RSS subscribers, your Alexa ranking and your Technorati ranking. I’m not particularly high on any one of those but my Technorati ranking has always been rather superb for a site with my level of traffic at around the 100,000 mark. I started at well over a million when I started this blog back in November of 2006 so I have been rather proud of my progress.
So you can imagine my surprise when I went to go check today and saw my ranking nearing 20,000 and all the various numbers tripling. After the initial shock, I assumed Technorati had done something similar to what Google did for Feedburner a couple weeks ago in allowing people who read the RSS feed using the Google reader to be counted. However, I soon found that the change was due to the Root of All Evil himself, John Chow.
Yep, John’s idiotic scheme to get his blog into the Top 100 on Technorati had inadvertently sent my ranking skyrocketing as well. Apparently he did some ping trick to increase his link count and as a result, Technorati banned him.
With dreams of rocketing to the Technorati top 100 overnight, I grabbed a list of all blogs linking to John Chow dot Com, loaded it into the Pinging tool and blasted it away at Technorati. Now, Technorati doesn’t seem to mind if you send them a few pings (maybe even a few hundred). However, they seem to get upset when you try to send them 17,000. The results: Technorati banned my ass.
However, John was soon unbanned after playing stupid with Technorati’s support e-mail but the rest of us who have many links on his blog kept our new ridiculously high rankings. Of course, I’m not sure what I can do with this new, relatively high ranking but I’ll think of something. As for John, he should just stick to doing contests and such. Maybe I should have a contest or two here as well.

This article does not have a link to your page. So why is it counting?
ReplyI was a victim of John’s greed too . . . I was ranked over a million earlier this week and when I woke up this morning, I spit up my drink when I saw i was 135,217th (and checking now, it’s still going up)! Gotta love Darth Chow! Kind of makes me want to learn that ping trick too!
ReplyI’ve noticed a significant jump in my Technorati ranking as well. I used to be well north of the 100k mark and now I’m sitting at 78,469.
ReplyYeah, his Evilness got my blog banned!
ReplyI missed that last paragraph the first time I read your post, Ed. Maybe I should run some contests too. I have a couple extra 1234Pens promo pens kicking around, as well as some gear I got from Mobile Magazine that’s just collecting dust.
ReplyWhoa, that’s crazy. So John’s crazy antics increased your links to 265?! Nuts!
ReplyStephen and I were working on my blog this afternoon and noticed that John’s site and Stephen’s are still banned from Technorati
ReplyI just wrote about how john got me from the millions to cracking 100k . . . i still can’t figure out what he did, but I guess that’s good so I don’t tempt myself to try and crack technorati!
Reply[...] mentioned a few weeks back that my Technorati ranking went from just over the 100k mark to somewhere in the 20k’s, a surprising jump considering I didn’t hatch any kind of scheme to do so. However, I soon [...]
