Nagoya Basho Sumo Tournament…Teaser

Posted on July 24th, 2008 by Ed Lau

I haven’t gone through all the 2,500+ pictures I shot over 6 hours of massive dudes smashing each other but here’s a couple to get things going. There’s a lot more action where that came from (and video coverage!)

A few things I should probably mention beforehand. One…sumo is awesome. Although there were lulls in the action, I was never bored. Two…never bored but a bit hungry. Although you’re not allowed to bring food into the gymnasium, I recommend you figure out how to get some quick…because you won’t want to leave your seat if you loved it as much as I did. Three…the competitors weren’t as big as I expected. Although there are some that are REALLY tall (particularly one bloke from Bulgaria or something) and some are REALLY huge (one guy is ~350kg), some are average sized guys. A few were even shorter than me and a couple didn’t seem too much bigger either. Sumo wrestlers have a reputation for being very fat and the majority are but some of them, mostly the lower ranked guys, looked buff as hell.

Anyways, more to come in a few days. I’m going to enjoy Nagoya while I’m here and I’ll get the rest of this stuff done when I get back to Tokyo.
