N*E*R*D/Common – Souled Out @ Stanley Park

by Ed Lau on September 17, 2008

N*E*R*D, Common, Pharrell Williams, Common Sense

There’s hot, there’s fire and then there’s this…which I would probably describe as an inferno.

Two absolutely amazing sets put on by N*E*R*D and Common tonight at the Malkin Bowl in Stanley Park, which was smaller than I expected but that’s great since it makes the show more intimate. Pharrell, Shae and crew (sans Chad Hugo, though) kicked off the night starting with Anti-Matter, a great song to get everyone up and thrashing around. They went on to some more mellow hits like Sooner or Later but then got everyone back jumping with the incendiary Spaz (my personal favorite) and Everyone Nose.

Pharrell is a great showman with great energy on stage. The band pulls up random audience members and often involves the crowd in the show.

Me and Greg expected rapper Common to put on a more mellow, less rock band-esque show but he proved us entirely wrong with a crazy stage setup which included a bar, a couple drummers, guitars and a DJ. Common is a bit of a throwback to rappers that can hold their own on stage as he doesn’t have any hype men (y’know, those unknown dudes running around on stage rapping every other verse so the rapper can catch his breath).

Pharrell came back on stage to help with a couple songs, including the title track from Common’s upcoming new album, Universal Mind Control, that features one of the sickest dance beats I’ve heard in awhile. Another highlight was Common spitting a five minute freestyle midway through his extended encore.

I should also mention that…people need to go to these shows for the music more. Get into it and thrash around, people! You don’t need to take pictures with your crappy point and shoot cameras or even crappier camera phones every 10 seconds. Have some fun, dammit! I also could’ve done without the nearly 45 minute set change between acts but an amazing show nonetheless. If anyone else was there, what’d you think?

I know this is going to sound awful but this is the first time I have ever heard of them. They seem good, and I like how they get the audience involved with the concert you don’t often see that

yo… i was in Van for 3 days for work and was lucky enough to find out about this concert. the venue and the stage was impressive. the sound quality and volume was better then i expected for being outdoors. and yo… NERD rocked the place… but Common and that nightclub stage threw it down. his energy and lyricism is contagious. he makes it look so easy that you wanna freestyle along wit him in a circle. yo man… great concert.
