Well, not that I really was in the first place. It was more like…retail “get paid for near nothing” guy. It’s not that I’m lazy and such…I mean, I’ve maintained a blog for 18 months now. It’s just that I can’t stand the idea of working retail, really.

So I found out today that my company would not grant me a leave of absence from June to August, which will be my time in Taiwan for Computex and Japan. Of course, I’m not going to cancel my trip because they won’t give me the time off so instead, I thought I’d create the time off by quitting instead.

Of course, this means a couple changes in life. One, I won’t have to deal with the annoying customers that have given me so many hilarious stories over the years. Two, I won’t be covered under any sort of health care since I’m 25. I’ll have to apply for health insurance at UBC, where I still have one more year until graduation.

Thirdly, this means I’ll be entering unrestricted free agency…and will have to find another source of income sometime soon. Since I’ve still got a year of school, I don’t think I’ll be able to find a regular full time job yet. Heck, I might still have another couple years of school if I decide to apply for a photojournalism school. This means I’ll need a degree of flexibility.

And so, I’m thinking of taking up freelance writing like fellow Dot Com Pho Crew member Michael Kwan. I enjoyed writing during my time at hardCOREware.net but couldn’t maintain the schedule during more hectic school years. However, I don’t have very many credits left at school (a couple courses per term) so I’ll have plenty of time now and could fit writing for a review site or technology news blog in.

So if you know of a site looking for writers, let me know.

Anyways, if it wasn’t this year, I would’ve left retail next year anyways. It was time to leave that behind before I get stuck in a rut or something. I just didn’t enjoy the customer service thing…it really isn’t my bag, baby.

Either way…no time to think about that now. Stephen, John, Leo, Michael and I are headed to the Microsoft Zune launch party tonight, which should be a lot of fun. Check back for that tomorrow…where we’ll be attending an epic 30-man Dot Com Pho. I can’t wait to see what they say when we show up with such a huge party.

Oh, I’m sure they were awesome. “When I asked a question, the employee just starred at me blankly for two minutes!”

Congrats (I guess?) dude, you’re free! I got to give it up to those who work retail and continuously get pwn3d…I guess in your case it was the other way around! :)
