One Year Of the.[ED]ition

by Ed Lau on November 6, 2007

Ed Lau, ededition

It’s true. Exactly one year ago, I started my little (but awesome) corner of the internet. Honestly, it’s surpassed what I honestly expected and then some.

In terms of traffic, there have been a little over 140,000 unique visitors here in one year, which works out to an average of 383 visitors per day, which isn’t bad considering the low traffic I got during my first couple months and the absolutely horrible traffic in early summer. Right now, I receive anywhere between 500 to 800 visits a day. I currently have an Alexa ranking of 106,018th and, although it’s broken, my Technorati is a respectable 6,422. I set a goal of maintaining one post per day when I began and as of today, there are 453 posts here.

Income-wise, I’m nowhere near the earnings of some of the bigger blogs but hey, I’m not a make money online blog. However, I’m quite proud of the fact that monetization has paid for the site many, many times over (and bought some of the various awesome toys and stuff I post about). The first anniversary is paper…so if you all want to get me some cash… :D

However, what I’m most proud of is the fact that blogging has introduced me to a lot of totally awesome people and I’d like to thank everyone for making my site what it is. I mean, seriously…without most of you, it would just be me rambling like an idiot. Er…well, more like an idiot anyways. In no particular order…

  • Michael Kwan: I think Michael and I spoke for the first time the day I started my blog despite the fact we were both on REVscene, a local car club forum, for years prior. Today, I consider him a good friend and we even have a joint hockey blog. Other than the champ below, Michael has had more comments here than anyone else. Of course, that’s where he got his “big break”, so to speak…comment whoring on everyone’s blog including mine and several other Dot Commers. To date, he is the only blogger I’ve kicked in the chest.
  • Stephen Fung: Stephen was another guy I sort of knew through friends. Carl would tell me some stories about him sometimes but we had never met. However, Stephen was integral in the success of my blog…mostly as a test subject for eating 8000 calories worth of burger and fries and as comic relief in the contest videos. I mean, to be comic relief for idiots like Michael and I…you have to be a serious jackass.
  • Leo Chiang: I knew Leo prior to blogging from London Drugs. Leo has taken the Top Commentator title here five out of the eight months I’ve had the plugin and the only person to appear on all eight…and he’s posting spam either! If you want to grow up to be a Top Commentator one of these days, kids, take some Leo lessons.
  • Greg Morgan: Another Dot Com Pho member. Greg had a blog but didn’t really get serious until recently. His new blog, is one of the best names for a site ever and allowed me to say “big cock” several times on internet radio when we co-hosted the ShoeMoney Show.
  • Daily Kimchi Gary: Gary’s another member of REVscene I didn’t really get to know until I started blogging. I met him when I asked the forum who keeps a blog. Other than Michael and Leo, Gdog has made the Top Commentator list more times than anyone else but has never taken the top spot…which is really a testament to Leo’s dominance.
  • Gary Lee: Gary was the first blogger outside of the Vancouver area I got to know and the first person to ask me about exchanging links. Gary’s helped me with plenty of website (and Mac) issues and let’s not forget the Technorati link train, which brought many of our smaller blogs some spotlight.
  • Ms. Danielle: Danielle was the first person to link to my site just because she liked it and without asking for a link in return. Danielle is also a constant comment presence and has been Top Commentator once but mostly, I’m thankful for Danielle because she’s always been encouraging and telling me how much she likes reading the site. That and she always reminds me of stuff from when I was a kid and we have similar taste in stuff that’s generally awesome. Well, except the pink. I can’t pull off the pink.
  • Gary Jones and Rainer Schmoll: The remaining two SlapShotSquaders also get a shout, of course. Gary and BlueFur provide the hosting for my site and have helped me almost immediately with any problems I’ve had for the last year. He’s also hosted some of the best Saturday Dot Com events. Rainer has been a great help with website programming stuff that’s just way over my head. SlapShotSquad would not be possible without him as, well, Michael and I are entirely useless at anything not written in English and he’s awesome at CSS. It’s also a great pleasure to be able to talk to these guys about hockey since…some Dot Com Moguls aren’t Canuck fans.
  • John Chow: Well, John’s the one that encouraged me to start a blog in the first place and has always answered every question I have about blogging. John is the only person here I’ve really known for more than a year. John isn’t just an influence on my blog but with stuff like weekly Dot Com Pho, he helps plenty of others. There isn’t enough room here to thank the evil panda killer but thankfully, there are plenty of posts here that describe him in detail…starting with how he throws rocks at pandas. True story.

There are simply too many people that I want to thank but I think the orchestra is starting to play the “hurry the hell up” music. More special thanks go to: Jon Lee, Saman Sadeghi, Derrich, Derek Semmler, Shawn Knight, [Geeks Are Sexy], Jeff Kee, krillz, Nick Ramsay, and Carl “I Update Less Frequently Than Mudzy” Nelson.

If I didn’t mention you, I apologize. I consider everyone that visits my site important since you’re reading what I have to say of your own free will. Well, I guess with the exception of those of you I’ve threatened with various pointy sticks…but it’s not because I don’t recognize your contribution. It’s that when you write a post too long…people tend to zone out…but nevertheless, thanks to each and every one of the 140,000 who read my incessant blabbering for the last year.

To celebrate the beginning of another blog year, I’ll be holding a few contests as a thank you. Come back tomorrow to find out what’s going on!

Too long? You lost me at “It’s true.”

Seriously, congrats on the year of blogging and all the success (and fun) that you have had with it. Thanks for the mention down in the “afterthought” category. ;)

Congrats on the one year man, and the special mention! *blush*

Maybe one of these days I will out-whore Leo and take the top spot…;)

Leo November 7, 2007 at 12:11 am

It will take a more than all the kimchi in Korea for that to happen buddy ;)

Leo November 7, 2007 at 12:15 am

Despite the photo almost turning my stomach, I managed to read the whole thing. Actually, I just saw my name scattered throughout the post so it kept me going ;)
Congrats on the one year and the special mention!
