Pictures From The Subway

Posted on June 8th, 2007 by Ed Lau

I promised to show some more of my photos earlier when I asked folks to help me find a blogging niche, which I’m still undecided on but less worried about. When I first created this site, it was registered as edlauphoto.com but when I realized I wasn’t talking just talking photography, I decided to get myself another domain. There are very few things in life I can say I have a passion for. I usually half-ass my way through a lot of things, which usually isn’t that bad. However, I’m quite proud to say that I use my entire ass when it comes to photography.

This particular series was made years ago when I spent a little time in Korea and Japan. One of my first posts featured another picture from this particular trip. While subways are non-existant here in Vancouver due to our location relative to sea level, they are a very quick and convenient way of getting around in Asia. Of course, many subway systems, such as the one in New York, are usually gloomy places to be but the ones in Seoul and Tokyo were quite modern and clean. I did try to emphasis the colors a bit as a colorful environment isn’t what you’d normally think of in a subway setting.

Yes, I was quite obsessed with mixing still and moving subjects at the time. I had just purchased my first camera with a AI Servo setting and was making all sorts of blurry movement shots. I’ve still yet to capture the perfect one in a sport enviroment because it’s very difficult without the proper lighting since using a flash usually ruins it. I really had a thing for saturation then too…sort of like a Fujifilm Velvia effect.

Anyways, hopefully I get some feedback here. I’ll put up some more at a later date. I haven’t really produced anything worthy lately since blogging, working, exercise and cooking devour most of my time these days. I used to take my camera (when it was smaller) on bike rides all the time but as my equipment got bigger, it became more cumbersome. However, when I buy a new bike next week, I think I’ll bring my new little Canon SD800 with me.

really like the pictures and the focus. Those are the type of pictures I try to do, but my old camera can’t even come close to making it work.

Great photos! The combination of speed and still creates an awesome contrast.

And I love the SD800 as well for quick snaps. It takes great pictures for its size.

You know, you can make your blog a whatever blog - you can have your photos and write about other stuffs as well.

I really like all the photos you’ve shown on your blog and I wish I could have an eye like that for pictures. Somehow, they just never quite come out the same way I envision it in my head.

    Have a great weekend!

Count me as another person that really likes these photos. As someone that has been kicking around the idea of stepping up to a DSLR to pursue an interest in photography, I really enjoyed these pics.

Thanks for sharing a few more of your photos.

I wish I could even afford to upgrade my pocket digital camera much less afford a DSLR. Oh well, I’ll stick to taking photos of drunken women in clubs.

I nearly had a fiasco on my hands as my wife was going to order my a Nikon D80 for Father’s Day as she had found a great price online.

Since she doesn’t know a lot about the cameras or lens she asked me about it and when she told me she was going to order the D80 I told her that was far too expensive. When she told me she found it for about $350, my “scam” radar went off and I asked her to show me the site.

After some research on the site, I found nothing but bad things about the site and people sharing that they had been scammed and to avoid this place.

With more reading, I’ve been thinking of going with the D40 as I have read some great reviews and the price is much more affordable than the D80.
