Plane Crashes in Richmond, B.C.

plane crash, Richmond, BC, B.C., Saba Road

The whole story is probably blown a little bit out of proportion but hey, it’s not something that you see everyday.

This afternoon, a small aircraft took off fro the nearby Vancouver Internation Airport and shortly after, crashed into the ninth floor of an apartment building in just about the busiest possible part of Richmond. Police blocked off several blocks surrounding the crash site at Saba Road, near the Richmond Public Market. It’s still early so there aren’t any injury reports as of yet.

By the time I got there, most of the wreckage had been cleared and it just looked like a hole in an apartment building. There were probably hundreds of people gathered in the streets and I could literally hear people exaggerating the story already. One idiot compared it to September 11th on CTV. I can’t believe a legitimate newspaper published a comment like that. C’mon, it’s a plane crash but it’s nowhere near the scale of 9/11. Let’s not sensationalize it, folks. It was probably an accident…they happen sometimes.

That’s not my picture. I just grabbed it from The Globe and Mail since I didn’t have my camera on me. John was also on the scene and has some better pictures.

UPDATE: Geez, I can’t believe another moron compared this to 9/11 on John’s blog…

It’s about as bad as people crashing their cars into each other in Richmond…which is pretty much a regular occurrence…in Richmond that is…

This ain’t no 911…not even close. Though it is unfortunate that someone died. I wonder what happened? It’s not like there are a lot of things to hit after you leave the airport.

I see you have the same story up as John. Same news but differently written. By the way, if you wonder who I am? I’m the idiot who said about 9/11 of John’s blog. Remember me?

This is the reason why they put height restrictions on structures in Richmond, as it is in the flight path of the airport.
The 9th floor isn’t very high either. So far two people are in hospital and the pilot is dead.

Global also reported that the Police wouldn’t let their helicopter in the air space around the crash site either…

It’s amazing how much that helicopter is in the air…

That is a nice shot …. but did u see the plane entering the building …. it might be a small plane i guess, considering the size of the hole in the building …

My brother used to live in that same tower but on the 13th floor, but on the west side. I was there 10 minutes after it happened and the scene was pretty crazy! I saw the Asian lady yelling and waving to the authorities below! She seemed pretty distressed as one would imagine. More pics on my blog.

I’m well aware. Click on the link to the Toronto Star and you’ll understand.

Comparing it to 9/11 is just ridiculous but it can be scary. I was in New York when the pitcher from the Yankees crashed his private plane into a building and it was only a few blocks away from where I was at the time.

It was certainly a scary experience until the details started to come out and there were people over-reacting.

[...] Ed Lau has a good write-up about it on his site. This is a just a freak accident, not a terrorist attack like someone are freaking out about. If you enjoyed this post, please buy me a beer. [...]
