Proper Sushi Etiquette

Posted on December 10th, 2007 by Ed Lau

I can’t ever get enough sushi. I probably have it two or three times a week, usually for lunch since it’s delicious and fish is fantastic for you.

We’re a bit more relaxed when it comes to etiquette but in Japan, where everyone is courteous almost to the extreme, everything is very proper. Here’s a training video that shows the right way.

…no, I’m not serious.

    Unfortunately, the video is no longer available. but, it seemed odd to me that this was a Japanese etiquette video showing the person using their fingers to dip the sushi. That would be one of the biggest etiquette goofs you could make in Japan.

    @Bay Area Lawyer:

    Actually, it’s perfectly fine to eat sushi with your fingers. It’s acceptable and even some people who know how to use chopsticks will. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t keep your manners about you (meaning eat with your hands as politely as possible) but using your hands isn’t rude. Using a fork might be.
