Redecorating My Place

Posted on March 29th, 2007 by Ed Lau

I was sitting in my room this morning and realized that…it really hasn’t changed much since I left high school. Heck, there are posters in here that I remember from elementary school! I guess I never really noticed but I decided today that I’m going to basically tear my place apart and do it all over again. Of course, I want stuff to be functional but as with just about everything, style is just as if not more important so it is vital that everything looks awesome.

The first thing I’m going to change from top to bottom is all my posters. I still have a world map from National Geographic hanging on one of my walls. Not only do I not need a reference to remember how countries are properly spelled…but I’m rather sure that at least a few of these -stan countries that outline Russia have changed some way or other. Two of the five players on a Canucks poster I have near my desk no longer play for the record-breaking current team.

I’ve decided I want a mix of stylish concert and movie posters adorning my walls rather than outdated geographical references. However, I have a strict criteria.

Now, as a member of REVscene, I know that most people my age have two types of posters on their wall: Tupac and naked women. Now I like naked chicks as much as the next guy, but I’m going for a slightly more classy look. While boobies, along with money, are the reason we all live and breathe, having them all over your walls usually don’t scream cool unless you are, in fact, a porn star. Tupac, of course, is even worse. If you have a poster of Tupac on your wall, you’re probably that 16 year old punk with saggy pants outside the liquor store that asks me every time to buy him a Colt .45. Get a job.

No, what I’m looking for is artwork. While a Monet or Picasso would look ridiculously out of place at my…place, there’s no reason why concert and movie posters can’t be artistic. I’m looking for posters that look like they should be framed rather than held in place by push-pins. These three, for example, for The Strokes, The Arctic Monkeys and British rappers The Streets and Lady Sovereign, look great and in no way associate me with silly teenagers who think a shirtless black man over a background of marijuana is something you’d want to hang on your wall.

I am open to suggestions. In particular, if anyone can point me in the direction of a great looking mini-fridge or perhaps a lamp that doesn’t look like I still live in a college dorm, please let me know.

Yo Ed . . check out this site for ideas - http://www.apartmenttherapy.com - I would suggest picking out a color for your room so you can accent it nicely with your movie posters (very nice by the way) . . . i know this may sound hella corny, but check out some feng shui stuff . . . i’m not gonna say it works . . .just saying it couldn’t hurt, right? Good Luck with the makeover!

Hey, there isn’t anything wrong with having a Tupac poster. I once did, but now my room’s walls are barren with the exception of my UBC diploma. Then again, the only time I ever spend in my room is when I’m sleeping.

Might I suggest some movie posters like The Godfather?

Ed, check out the work by Jermaine Rogers (http://www.jermainerogers.com/index.html) I sport a few of his prints framed on my walls. If you like his stuff you may also dig EMEK, or Jared Conner, both of which Jermaine has done pieces with.

@msdanielle - Thanks for the heads up. Ninja Tunes artists aren’t just good for having stuff to frame, the music is great also! Two of my favorite artists on NT are Bonobo and Blockhead.

Gangster movies are almost as cliche as Tupac, really. It’s only cool if it’s an original vintage one, not the crappy DVD cover art.

Danielle and Gary, great suggestion! Great CD cover art. However, I’m really looking more for concert posters rather than CD covers…proportion-wise.

Gdog: I never had a Tupac poster. I was never really a fan…I have respect for him as an artist but I’m just not a fan.

Kiltak: She’s hawt…but I’m not really going for posters of hot chicks. Posters of hot chicks everywhere makes your room look like a college dorm…or prison.

Matt: Wow…that dude has some freaky stuff! But some of it is very good. Does he have a store? I might be blind but I don’t see it.

Are you only looking for music/movie posters? What about graffity art like Banksy’s? I know he sells print of his work but can’t find it right now.

Jermaine recently (within the past month) had a redesign of his site put online. I’m not too familiar with the new version of his site, but he is very friendly. If you find a piece you are interested if you drop him a line I’m pretty sure he’d send you an email in response.

damn! i used to have the private press tour poster on my wall and it was really nicely framed. i think my ex- has it now. anyway it was a really nice poster (similar to the album cover) and i can’t find it anywhere online - i think bc it’s pretty much just the posters that were taken off the walls at the concert.

you should check art.com too for prints
