Road Rage!

by Ed Lau on December 13, 2006

Those of you who know me know about my…road rage. It’s not that I hate everyone…I just hate them when they’re on the road. However, you can’t seriously blame that all on me since I live in Richmond, home of some of the worst drivers in Canada and possibly ever. We’ve had several scandals regarding immigrants buying their driver’s licenses so it really is no surprise.

I recently read something in the newspaper that may have determined another cause of my road rage. I remember I read it in the Province but I can’t find it on the internet so here, in the Denver Post, is the article it originated from. It turns out that naming your car or ascribing human traits to your car makes you more likely to experience road rage.

This is Sarah, my ’04 Mazda 3. While there may be some merit to the research done in the article, I can’t see why personifying my car makes me more aware that other people on the road are jackasses. When I give someone the finger, I’m not doing it because I’m mean, I’m doing it because they cut me off or drive at 20 or don’t signal. Of course, giving my car a name and a female name, probably makes me a bit more protective and therefore, when someone is stupid, it probably makes me want to yell at them more.

Hey Ed,
Thanks for the comment and props! Good to know that you still browse on xanga, though you don’t in yours anymore. I always like reading you blog writing and viewing your stunning photos. I miss your artistic pictues of people and ordinary life!

Yeah, I am here in London now for the next 4-5 months..until April Easter Sunday! I’ve settled here and have started working on the 5th day of arrival as a supply (substitute) primary school teacher! This is actually my third time here. So I am familiar with the public transport, and some basic things living here. My nightlife has not yet been too exciting as work and settling down have kept me so busy. Sorting out Cdn dollars and GBP is no fun as well. I am beginning to make Pounds, so I’ve to look at everything in Pounds..thought it’ll be sweet to bring home Pound savings when I leave. Good money indeed!

I am going to Paris, France w/ my boyfriend on Saturday for 4 nights and 3 days..only yeah. haha. I still need to look up on more details of places to go to in Paris. No time! Then, I’ll go to Taunton, England to visit his family for Xmas. What are you doing for Christmas this year?

Tomorrow is a big day for me- teaching observation by the head teacher! It’s part of my interview. I hope I get this long term position if all goes well. If not, I look forward to another opportunity during my time here. Pls keep me in your prayers!

I’m sick from the flu- terrible (dry) coughs and sniffles! There are so many children in a class here. My Canadian accent don’t really help either. I sometimes feel like Napolean in a British classroom of 30 + children! My creativity is high in demand here. haha!

Safe and Sensible but also enjoyable driving, Ed! Take it easy!
