Visiting Union Gospel Mission
John Chow, Stephen Fung, Greg Morgan and I were invited down to UGM today to have some lunch and hear about some of the new stuff they’ve been doing lately. We’re always glad to go down to UGM as well as help them raise some funds to help folks in need over the holidays.

Throw everything you thought was good looking in a mobile phone and throw it all out the window. Take a look at this.

It’s called the SLIQ and yes, it’s quite slick in every possible way. It’s a design by Mike Serafin and while it has Samsung stamped on it, I’m not quite sure if this is an actual Samsung design. However, if it isn’t, it should be…it looks that good.
Sadly, most of these concept designs never actually go to production. I mean, there’s still no sign of the Nokia Aeon even though that concept has been around for awhile now. Like the Aeon, the SLIQ doesn’t really have a keypad but instead has something that Serafin calls an “advanced touch interface”. I’m not sure what that means but I’m sure it’s something like the active touchscreen on the Aeon.
If this isn’t an official Samsung design, it should be. It fits in great with all the awesome Samsung phones of the last couple years. However, it looks like the phone has a piano black finish and well, that scratches easily. If they were to make this out of brushed black aluminum, it would be perfect.

I wrote about this last week for Mobile Mag (http://www.mobilemag.com/content/100/340/C12653/). I agree, it fits in great with the Samsung portfolio. They were the first brand to came to mind when I saw this thing, because they’re all about slick-looking black gadgets…. like our D900 cell phones, their HDTVs, etc.
Chances are that it won’t make it to production though, because the designer — to my knowledge — has no official relationship with the Korean electronics giant.
ReplyLooks very nice, but also looks very breakable and like a fingerprint magnet. When are they going to make a nice phone for giants like me? I currently have a Motorola E815 which is big enough, but I will never get a flip phone again. The hinge is starting to wear out already.
ReplyI had forgotten all about the Aeon!!
This phone is slick too!
