So I Joined Facebook…

by Ed Lau on July 17, 2007

That means remember, if anyone catches me on there for more than half an hour, please punch me in the face.

I finally took the plunge after weighing out all the factors and actually logged into my account. Yes, I know…I couldn’t find a better picture of myself. You’d think a photographer would have a picture of himself.

With the summer heat bringing blog activity to a melting standstill, I thought I’d do something to improve traffic. After reading Michael’s post on how Facebook affects a site’s traffic, I was still hesitant as, well, c’mon…you have to admit Facebook feels like something we’d be playing around with in high school. I felt a little ridiculous on that site being as how I’m almost 25. Heck, why not break out the Friendster and AsianAvenue too?

I’m still staggered at how ridiculously awesome of a marketing tool this site is. Having a blog is a powerful personal branding tool but Facebook is just amazing for research. It’s like having focus groups and surveys all built into the same site. This thing could put telemarketers out of business.

It’s a scary site though. Some folks I haven’t seen in years and years suddenly found me mere hours after I put my profile up. Heck, some people I don’t even know wanted to add me as a friend. I think I’ll stick to adding people I actually know but if you’re a reader, feel free to come find me but leave a message saying you came through the blog, thanks. :)

I remember I earned enough points on that thing to get a rubber keychain. LOL. A couple of my friends were more hardcore about it and got enough points for a t-shirt and/or a cap.
