Speed Link Sunday – Happy Birthday Edition (and Contest Update!)

by Ed Lau on October 26, 2008

Not a lot happened this week in comparison to previous weeks. Y’know, with MacBook announcements and the Canadian election going on. Next week should be even more eventful as the Americans select either Barack Obama or John McCain as their next president. It’s important that you get out there and vote, people…or you have no right to complain when the rest of the nation chooses someone you don’t like.

I don’t think I have to remind you what a massive mistake you folks down south made four years ago. Let’s not have that happen again, m’kay?

Anyways, let’s look at what else happened around the blogosphere this week.

  1. First of all, let’s all wish recent Deadmonton transplant Michael “The Segway Crasher” Kwan a happy birthday! Apparently he’s spending the entire day eating free food…and there isn’t much that we Dot Com moguls heart more than free food. Happy birthday, dude!
  2. Mike Huang wrote a guest post for John Chow this week documenting the effect of the recently implemented Twitter Shoutout segment in our weekly Dot Com Pho videos. Even though there is no actual link for anyone to click on, Mike saw a big jump in traffic on his gaming site, Pinky Arcade. He couldn’t figure out why the number of visitors spiked at first but soon realized it was the power of our Twitter Shoutouts. Mike got a nice amount of traffic for his site by following me on Twitter that week and paying attention around 12:30pm. Hint, hint?
  3. Coach Stan at Thinkreferals Business Network documents some of the poor driving habits of people in Vancouver. Surprisingly, while I am usually guilty of driving above the speed limit, I’m not, however, guilty of any of the 12 things he’s listed. I do, on the other hand, see far too much of that sort of thing everyday…especially living in Richmond.
  4. Next week Kelly Frankson, who we’ll hopefully see on the Canadian Olympic team for London 2012, will be hosting a weight lifting clinic for a good cause: helping her Nigerian Olympic weightlifting coach fly his family to Canada. I know Dot Com Pho crew member Stephen Fung will be in attendance and I might be as well if I can make it on Saturday.
  5. Alex Shalman describes 15 ways to network like a rockstar. We have lots of networking events here in Vancouver and I find the only thing you really need to know is…don’t be an ass. Seriously, just don’t act like a jerk and things should work out just fine. But then again, I’m an extroverted, outgoing personality so chatting people up might be more difficult for some. However, take heart in knowing that you probably don’t have to put as much of an effort as me into not being an ass.

Contest Reminder

I’ve received some great responses in regard to the contest I’ve been running and I’ll be setting the deadline for November 7th! How do you enter?
