Speed Link Sunday! – July 22nd

by Ed Lau on July 22, 2007

My buddy Leo does a health check every Friday. Personally, I don’t think I can think of something to say about health every Friday but since I decided to live a healthier lifestyle two months ago, I’ve dropped about 11 or 12 pounds simply by eating better and getting out more. I’ve reduced sugar and salt significantly by cooking my own meals, cutting out pop and eating lots more veggies and fruit. I haven’t been able to run or bike for the last few weeks since I dislocated my knee but I should be back on my bike this week. It’s a pretty good start. I might be in good enough shape by the end of the summer to give Crossfit a try.

  1. Apparently Derrich is now a soccer fan due to David Beckham’s arrival in Los Angeles. Honestly, I can’t believe more people (read: America) don’t watch soccer but can pay attention to “sports” as mundane as baseball (where people are sitting or standing for almost the entire game) or NASCAR (where everyone turns left for 500 laps). It’s amazing since soccer is one of the most skilled and beautiful sports to watch. That and Becks isn’t even one of the most exciting players! The man is very good at free kicks and crosses but he’s had probably two or three spectacular and memorable plays in his career whereas guys like Didier Drogba, Kaka, Christiano Ronaldo, and Ronaldinho are human highlight reels (or Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos and Zidane years ago). The Beckham’s aren’t even interesting! I watched that show Posh stars in and was bored to tears!
  2. [Geeks Are Sexy] tells you how you can get an action figure of…yourself! Complete with kung-fu grip! This is the very definition of awesome…an entirely useless toy that costs an absurd amount of money (starting at $425) but, dude, it’s an action figure of yourself!
  3. Ever wanted to see a gummi bear explode into a flurry of gas, flamming gummi body parts and flashing lights? myfishtank.net shows you what happens when you combine gummi bears with…something…something. Hard to believe I used to be a chemisty major, huh?
  4. The evil one himself, John Chow, was not present at this week’s Dot Com Pho, leaving myself, Michael, Greg and Wolf to maintain tradition. Looks like he’s having a good time at the Microsoft company picnic, though. I think he’s trying to pitch his Microsoft Panda Punching Simulator idea to them…
  5. Darin Carter has a write up on what you can do about click fraud. A number of bloggers have run into problems with supposed Adsense click fraud including Kumiko and the world’s dumbest man, Casey Serin. While Adsense isn’t our only way to make money, it is a significant method of doing so and bloggers should be aware of any problems to do with it to prevent Google from banning your ass…

I wouldn’t say soccer “fan”. I do admit that all this attention on David Beckham is what got me to watch Saturday’s match. I’ve watched numerous Ronaldo and Ronaldinho highlight films on YouTube. They are VERY talented. I’m assuming you agree with my comparison of DB being the “Robert Horry” of soccer…making the big shots and reliable…but hardly a superstar.

…and I couldn’t agree with you more on the baseball and NASCAR stuff. Can’t watch them for the life of me.

Becks is anything but reliable. He’s missed more big shots than he’s made, I’d say. He’s been the whipping boy for England on more than one occassion when he’s screwed up their World Cup hopes.

I want one of those action figures! That would be a cool Christmas present for the kids as well, now that would be something to take to school for show-and-tell.
