Speed Link…Monday? - July 16th
July 16th, 2007 by Ed Lau |I just realized I didn’t post my usual weekly speed link post yesterday. A few friends and I drove down to the States for shopping and dinner. I wanted to go down and grab some more Nike Pro Fit shirts since they’re so damned comfy and breathable, perfect for the ridiculous summer heat. Shopping in the US is cheap at the moment since the Canadian dollar is high. Since I drove, I was pretty pooped when I got back and crashed almost immediately.
- Jane May’s new project, Daily Web Ideas, has a list of three blogging mistakes to avoid. I follow rules one and three (blogging consistently and safely) but I do have a wide number of topics here since this is more of a personal blog. I do have plans to expand and start up another blog with a more specific focus, though. Jane also has a guest blogged post from Jamie Harrop on seven ways to increase your PageRank. This blog is currently a PR4 and I think I’ll probably remain a PR4 through the next PR update in July. It would be great to move up one though as the benefits of being in Google’s good books are worth it.
- John Chow told me this story at Dot Com Pho this week and I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Well, actually that describes a lot of the stories he tells me but…Google writing bad cheques? Freakin’ Google with the billions of dollars to spare?
- Everyday Weekender has a list of barbeque tips for having a great cookout this summer. There’s nothing quite like grilling up a ton of meat outside during summertime. He does suggest putting out some vegetarian dishes though…it’s a good thing I don’t know too many vegetarians.
- Cash Quests has turned off all comments. I think Kumiko is losing it, personally. The pink scheme was the first to go but now, no comments? Seriously, what’s a blog without comments. It might work out to her advantage in terms of monetization but for one thing, people who read via RSS aren’t going to visit the site anymore (and therefore, fewer ad clicks) and honestly, a blog doesn’t feel much like a blog without comments. I mean, I value the interaction and feedback I get from each of my readers and couldn’t imagine turning comments off here. I wouldn’t sacrifice the sense of community for the sake of making a tad more money.
- Jon Lee has some tips for those of us that spend hours at their desk in front of a computer. I totally agree with his high caffeine drink comment. I don’t know why but I get the crash a lot faster than most people. Red Bull and Rockstar literally put me to sleep. I can literally feel myself get tired after finishing a can. Coffee is a bit better but lately, I’ve nearly cut that as well. Even though I sometimes pull all-nighters when writing papers at a coffee shop, I usually don’t drink much coffee. I usually get the matcha drinks instead. Lately I’ve been waking up to fruit smoothies (since I just bought that Magic Bullet blender) instead of coffee.
