Studio 60 Honors New Orleans

Posted on December 4th, 2006 by Ed Lau

Last night’s episode just blew me away.

There’s just something so classy and musically beautiful about a good jazz brass section and it probably helped that they were playing my favorite Christmas song, O Holy Night. There’s just so much emotion from the trumpet player in this song and to have all of them standing in front of black and white pictures of New Orleans with the spotlight gently illuminating them and the snow drifting behind was just spectacular…a great way to end the show. I couldn’t help but tear up a little. It was beautiful.

On a completely different note, I was also admiring the lead trumpet’s suit. Seriously, the bold pink, french cuffs, matching pocket square and everything tailored to perfection? It just screams GQ. Of course, it also said to me that…one, there’s no way a homeless guy could afford such an amazing suit and two, if he can, then that’s awesome that a man can take such pride in his profession that regardless of his financial situation, he went and got a suit because he was going to be on live national television in honor of his home town. However, it could just be wardrobe…but I like my way better.

While much has been done to revive New Orleans in the wake of Katrina, it seemed appropriate at this time to remind us that many are still recovering and could use some help from everyone whether they’re network television executives or regular folks. Hurricane Katrina was such a tragedy but especially in recent years, it is in tragedy that the human spirit truly shines.
