Left 4 Dead
I really need to find more time in the day. This is one of those “perfect storm” times of the year when tons of quality games come out and there’s simply not enough time to play them all. I saw a video for Left 4 Dead the other day and was convinced that [...]

I was having lunch with some friends today at our favorite place to get Vietnamese sandwiches, New Asia Deli. For those of you who don’t know, Vietnamese subs are these cheap, delicious sandwiches that are made with a small, incredibly crispy French baguette, Vietnamese ham, pickled carrots and radish (and occassionally cuccumber) and some cilantro and jalapenos for flavor. The result is the sandwich that I would choose if someone, for some reason, said I could only have one sandwich for the rest of my life. Yep, they’re that good but be warned. The bread is extremely crispy and as a result, they make a gigantic mess if you eat them fresh out of the toaster. The bread is like shards of glass in your mouth…delicious, delicious glass.
Out of all the places I’ve tried, New Asia Deli is easily the best. Some places use mushy bread that doesn’t make my mouth bleed, some places use strange (well…stranger…meat) and other places don’t use enough pickled veggies…which I love. New Asia Deli does it all perfectly. I’ve eaten here so often they call me by name and know what I’m going to order when I walk in the door.
However, today, I discovered that they had raised their prices…again. Almost a year ago now, they went from $10 for four subs to $11 for the same. Now it’s $12! Not outrageous by any means but still. Then, as I was stuffing my face with their equally good pho (not as good as Pho Lan in this department but still very, very good), we had an epiphany. All pho places had either gone up in price or closed their doors forever, which lead to our discussion of what we call…the Pho-spiracy!

Pho Lan used to be $5.50 for a large bowl of noodle soup but now, they’re at $7.00. Other places around town, or what’s left of the other places around town, have also gone up in price. Those that stayed relatively stable have now gone out of business. For example, the pho place on Buswell near the IHOP closed down a few months ago. The same with the one on the corner of #3 and Cambie.
Our theory is that the owners of the various pho places in Richmond formed a powerful underground conglomerate and have an evil plan to slowly raise prices to fund their plans for worldwide domination through getting everyone addicted to pho and Viet subs. The Pho Nazi of Pho Lan is probably the leader of this shadowy group and along with the others like New Asia Deli, Pho Viet and Pho Hoa, they’re muscling smaller pho restaurants out of business. First Richmond…then the rest of Vancouver…and eventually the world.
Some of you might be thinking that the price increases are a result of inflation but that’s just what the powerful pho lobbists want you to think. I know the truth…and if you don’t hear from me tomorrow, that means they will have gotten to me or bribed me with free pho and Viet subs…which wouldn’t be at all bad. Spread the truth before it’s too late!

…sorry, I blacked out there. What happened?
What’s in these things!?

I’ve noticed the same thing in Vancouver. Not only are they raising prices (ever so slowly, mind you), but they’re also cutting down on how much meat they give you. One pho place that I can recommend to you, however, is the one on the corner of King Edward and Kingsway. I forget the actual name.
And WTF, large pho used to be $5.50 at Pho Lan? and here I am getting stuck with a bill of $11 including an iced coffee (which is cheaper elsewhere… usually $2.25 or so).
ReplyJust watch out for the Pho Mafia.
“Hey Ed, Pho-Get-About-It”
ReplyShit, the one on #3 and Cambie is gone? That used to be my favourite for Pho. I was looking forward to going back there.. So far I haven’t been able to find a good authentic Pho place run by Vietnamese in Hong Kong, which is kind of ironic considering I’m like 1 hour away from Vietnam…
I’m sure there’s a billion places, I just don’t know where to look.
ReplyThey took down PHO BICH NGA too! Those bastards!
ReplyMan, Pho Lan is the best…you are right…everytime I eat their subs it rips apart my gums and the lining of my mouth.
ReplyEven my other favourite next to Pho Lan is gone, Taison on No. 3 and Saba across from Shoppers Drug Mart. But that #21 Large at Pho Lan is still worth $7
Can’t believe Pho Bich Nga is gone too. Shame.
