John Chow, Stephen Fung, Greg Morgan and I were invited down to UGM today to have some lunch and hear about some of the new stuff they’ve been doing lately. We’re always glad to go down to UGM as well as help them raise some funds to help folks in need over the holidays.

The Machine Girl: Like Bionic Woman…But With More Weird.

Ah, the Japanese. Although the Germans, Swedes and heck, even us Canadians can get pretty kooky sometimes, everyone’s level of weirdness if dwarfed in comparison to Japan. You may have see the fake motivational posters that say Japan: producers of 86% of the world’s weird #*%^ but in reality, I’m almost sure those numbers are correct. I mean, there isn’t a chance you could find a game show where people get slapped in the crotch in America.

I’ve seen my fair share of Japanese movies too and some of them truly defy definition. Example? Check out The Machine Girl, where a regular schoolgirl gets attacked by yakuza, loses an arm and gets hellbent on revenge! Be warned, though…as there’s plenty of blood and senseless violence in the trailer, meaning it’s pure awesome.

The Japanese-style over-the-top violence will be familiar to folks who loved the two Kill Bill movies and one of my favorites from Japanese cinema, Battle Royale. I mean, how could you say no to a movie with both ninjas and tempura? That would be insanity.
