Visiting Union Gospel Mission
John Chow, Stephen Fung, Greg Morgan and I were invited down to UGM today to have some lunch and hear about some of the new stuff they’ve been doing lately. We’re always glad to go down to UGM as well as help them raise some funds to help folks in need over the holidays.

CNN posted a statement by Jimmy Carter that called the War in Iraq one of the greatest blunders by any American president. It’s funny coming from Jimmy Carter, probably one of the more “flawed” presidents in American history.
Former President Jimmy Carter sharply criticized President Bush’s handling of the war in Iraq Tuesday and told CNN he believes the U.S. invasion of the country may prove to be as big a blunder as the U.S.’s eight year involvement in the Vietnam War.
“It’s going to prove, I believe, to be one of the greatest blunders that American presidents have ever made,” Carter told Wolf Blitzer on ‘The Situation Room.’
When asked how Iraq will be compared to Vietnam, Carter said it will be a “close call” but noted U.S. actions in Iraq are more publicized around the world than they were in Vietnam.
“I think its going to be a close call, but perhaps much more vividly known by the rest of the world than Vietnam was,” Carter said.
But the former president said he disagreed with those who have labeled the situation in Iraq a “civil war.”
“I think civil war is a serious — a more serious circumstance than exists in Iraq,” Carter said. “And I say that based on some of the civil wars with which we’ve been involved in the last few years.”

Rather true, really. Vietnam was disasterous, and Iraq is no different right now although the level of casualties for the Americans isn’t quite as high, there is no doubt that the War in Iraq isn’t going according to plan and President Bush isn’t making things any better with recent policy. Slate.com went as far as to compare Bush to the Nazis, which is getting a bit extreme.
It’s been almost four years since Bush declared victory in Iraq but the death toll keeps rising and more and more are calling for the US to withdraw from Iraq. Withdrawl seems like the only real solution right now. However, Bush also said Tuesday that there will be no withdrawl until “the mission is complete”. Amazing. The man just won’t admit that he’s wrong here. Great job putting this guy back in office in 2004, by the way.

One word describes it all, whether it’s Vietnam or Iraq: quagmire.
